Every elf in the dark realm is just as intelligent as the other, this made selecting a single leader difficult for the dark elves. All elves are perfect candidates to rule over their realm, however, the best candidates were the elderly. The older elves in the realm had a bit more knowledge and experience over the younger ones, this made them a bit wiser. It was because of this reason that the panel of presidents was created- a group of wise elderly elves to lead all the others.Over the years, the seats on the panel had been occupied by so many different elves, this was because the oldest elves were the likeliest to die first. However, this all changed when the advancement in their science lead them to the creation of the death cure. The death cure...
...like its name...
Cured the illness of death and gave immortality to whomever drinks it. This immortality only stopped the elves from aging and dying of natural causes but it did not prevent them from being killed or dying by accident.
A few decades after the creation of the death cure, the panel of presidents were still occupied by the same elderly elves. These were the same elves that began making relations with other realms after the depletion of their own resources. The first realm they made contact with was the realm of the dwarves.
The dwarves were almost as intelligent as the dark elves, however, they specialised more in engineering and craftsmanship. They re-invented items from the dark realm to work more efficiently than the dark elves ever could and the relationship between the two realms grew strong. Eventually, the dark elves would begin importing potions of their death cure into the realm of the dwarves...
... this became a problem.
The death cure the elves created was designed for elven DNA. So, when the dwarves ingested it, it did cure them of death... but it did so with a little side effect. A virus broke out...
...and the undead creatures were born.
When the virus broke out, the elven presidents were all present in realm of the dwarves...all except one. The elf that remained in the dark realm would now carry the guilt for the responsibility of infecting the dwarves, along with the burden of having to cure them.
The virus that the dwarves suffered was transmutable to the elves, this was because the structure of the death cure was made for them. For this reason, the elves were unable to risk entry into the infected realm to retrieve an undead creature.
Now, with Reina and the twins venturing to the realm of the dead, an opportunity presented itself. And, if the dark elves could get their hands on one of these undead creatures, they may be able to reverse engineer the virus and cure the dwarves.
The only problem with this plan was that Reina was supposed to come back with a single undead creature, however, she had come back with multiple. Also, because she had used the teleportation device and not the port within the station, the undead creatures had unrestricted entry into the dark realm. At the sight of the dark elves the undead creatures lost all control and all hell broke loose. In a matter of minutes, the virus grew rampant and the realm of the dark elves...
...was on the verge of death.
