Safire fur.

That was what caught the young girl's emerald coloured eyes. She looked closer, hoping she'd seen right. She was correct, the dyed fur was an azure colour. She was relieved at the sight.

"Oh, I see you're awake, princess."

The blonde girl looked at her butler. His silver, balding hair stood out from his black suit. His long face almost always seemed like he was frowning. "Yes, I am." She hummed.

"Well, due to recent changes," Said changes being a potential war, the butler sugarcoated things a lot, "you'll be having a personal guard from now on."

"I see." The princess looked at the guard standing next to the old man. The Safire Soldier. . . They were covered head to toe with armour, as all guards are permitted to, with additional fur which was dyed a royal blue. The entire castle assumed they were mute, as they hadn't spoken a word in the five years they've been here. They were also the most talented guard in the castle, being given the responsibility to protect the princess, despite being a little shorter than normal guards, but taller than the princess.

Most curious of all, no one had seen their face.

"Well," The butler clapped his hands once, "That's all the news I have for now. Enjoy your day, princess." He turned around on his foot and left. The guard gave a bow before leaving the room and closing the door behind themselves to guard it.

...

The castle had gone quiet after the sun had set, as it always did. Soon, the silence was broken and the walls echoed with the scream of a knight.

...

"He's dead." The general explained to the king.

"What happened?" His majesty asked.

"We're unsure. This guard was patrolling, so no one was nearby."

"He couldn't have been killed by the breeze." The king scoffed. "Go search every corner of this castle, see if anyone has left."

"Yes, your highness." The general bowed before turning around and barking commands at the soldiers.

...

The weather grew colder and the greenery began to freeze up, but not enough to snow. Meanwhile, Destiny, the princess, started to let the guard into her room instead of standing on the cold, marble floor. She used the excuse that she "needed a guard who wasn't half frozen to protect her if she's in danger." In reality, she was curious. Her life has always been eat, please, sleep, repeat. She was glad there was something different now.

The guard accepted, coming into her room and, sometimes, just sitting there, enjoying each other's company. Now, however, Destiny was explaining what happened once during a meeting with the different kings she overheard.

As soon as she finished, the guard laughed. They immediately covered where their mouth was covered, shocked with themselves.

"You're. . . A girl. . ?" Destiny asked. No doubt in her mind, that was a female voice.

The taller took a deep breath, her voice seemed to echo a bit because of the helmet. ". . . Yes, princess. . ."

"O-oh. Is that why you act like a boy, y'know, being a guard?" Only male guards were allowed in the castle, the entire kingdom knew that.

"Also yes."

"I'm alright with it." She hummed. The other girl looked at her, obviously surprised. "You can take your helmet off, if you want to. I'll only have a problem if you aren't doing your job properly."

". . . Thank you, my lady." She reached behind her neck, tugging on a piece of metal. She pulled the helmet off her head. Destiny no longer questioned why they called her the Safire Soldier. Her eyes reminded the princess of the frozen lake outside her window, an icy blue colour. Her charcoal black hair swept in front over her face, covering a little bit of her chocolate brown skin.
