560 words. Cross dies instead of Chara. I'll make another version with a happy ending
Nightmare was woken up by his phone buzzing and ringing constantly. He was going to ignore them until he realized they were from Chara, and that he sounded panicked. Nightmare answered a call. "Kid? Is something wrong?" He asked tiredly but with concern.
"He was drunk-" Chara coughed. His voice was shaking. "And Cross' hurt. He needs a hospital, I've already called it, I just thought I'd let you know."
Nightmare shot up. "I'll be there as soon as I can." He quickly got ready to leave and took the car. There was only one hospital close to where he lived so Nightmare went there. He didn't care if he was speeding.
...
When Nightmare arrived, Chara was already there, sitting in a seat close to a door that had a bright red 'EMERGENCY' sign on it. "Hey kid. . ."
Chara looked over. "Hey Night." He looked back at the ceiling.
"Do you know how he is?" Nightmare asked, sitting next to him.
"No. . ."
"I'm sure he'll be alright. Cross is strong." Nightmare pat his shoulder lightly.
...
Nightmare was wrong.
He looked at Chara with concern. Chara seemed like he was breathing rapidly and holding his breath at the same time, Nightmare couldn't tell. "Hey, hey. . ." Nightmare crouched in front of him. He didn't know what to do or say. "Do you want to go in the car for a bit?" He asked gently. Chara nodded shakily. "Do you mind staying here for just a moment?" Chara shook his head. Nightmare sighed and kept Chara close as he asked the doctor something.
In a little while, a golden heart locket was placed in his palm.
"Can we come back later?" Nightmare asked the doctor. The doctor said yes.
Nightmare took Chara's hand and led him to the car. Chara sat in the passenger seat, Nightmare in the driver seat. As soon as they closed the doors, they broke.
Chara's eyes began to flood with black, to the point where the seat, if it was any other colour, would be stained. Nightmare rested his forehead against the steering wheel. At first it honked, so Nightmare moved to the top of the wheel. He carefully put the locket around his neck. In the moonlight, their tears shimmered.
...
Nightmare looked over at Chara and noticed he had fallen asleep. He used a tendril to fasten Chara's seatbelt. Nightmare let himself calm down as much as he could before starting the car and driving back home.
At one point, Dream called him. Nightmare picked up. "Brother?! Wher-"
"Shut up." Nightmare hissed. "Let me explain." He sighed. "Where do I start, Cross and Chara have an abusive father. I let them move in, hence the random stuff all over the house. Tonight, however, their dad took it too far. . . Cross- he- he isn't coming back. . ."
Dream processed this. "O-o-oh. . . I'm so sorry. . ."
"Fuck. . ." Nightmare cursed. His vision was getting blurry again, so he parked at the side of the road. "It hasn't even been fifteen minutes but," he cried, "I want my Crossy back, I want his smile back, I want his adorable voice back, I want his embrace back, I want to look into those beautiful eyes again and tell him how much he means to me, I want to cover him in kisses like I do- did. . Everyday. . ."
He wants his Crossy back. . .
