THE FIVE SAT ON a couch in front of the cops who were surrounded by parents. Veras, Lucas', Dustin's mom, and the Wheelers.
Jayden's parents didn't care to answer the phone, and Max's mom had been at work.
"What exactly were you all doing at the lake?" Chief Powell interrogated. The kids shared fake clueless looks.
"It's compli—"
"We were... we were just going for a walk." Max cut Dustin off, the other four didn't ask any questions and just nodded along with the lie.
"A walk? At ninep.m.?" Officer Callahan asked, not believing them.
Dustin nodded. "To the lake." His voice suddenly turned high-pitched. "We were gonna... take a little swim. Little night swim." The boy explained, the others just nodded.
Mrs. Henderson let out a sigh at her son's actions, "Dusty. Someone was just murdered there." She said sadly.
"Yeah, we... we didn't realize that until we got there." He lied.
"That's why we didn't swim," Lucas added, Vera nodded, patting her boyfriend's knee.
"And Nancy, was she with you at this night swim?" Mrs. Wheeler asked the kids.
"No." Max said at the same time Dustin said, "yes."
Dustin and Max turned to each other, Dustin wore a scared face while Max wore an annoyed one.
Vera nervously laughed and shook her head. "We are not that sure." She mumbled, "It's all really complicated. You know, young adults." She joked.
Dustin nodded, "yeah. She was there. Then for some reason, she left." Dustin continued the lie, looking between all the parents before motioning to Vera, "like Vera said, it's all complicated...."
