Rachel

After catching up on classwork over the weekend, I returned to work on Monday. I checked in with Kyler before heading to my office. He gave me a to-do list for him. I took it and worked on it most of the morning until the kids arrived.

Then someone knocked on my office door. I glanced up from the computer screen to find Colby standing in my doorway.

"Can I come in?" Colby asked.

"Sure." I offered Colby a friendly smile.

Colby entered the office, closed his door, and took a seat. I don't know why, but Colby unnerved me.

"What can I do for you?" I tried to keep my professional tone.

"I hope you don't think I'm too forward, but I was wondering if you wanted to go on a date with me?"

"What?"

"Would you like to go out with me?"

Before I answered, my office door opened, with Kyler appearing in the doorway. "Colby, I need you to set up paint easels in the activity room for the kids. It will help with their fine motor skills."

"Yeah, sure thing, boss." Colby stood up and leaned toward me. "Just think about what I said." Then he left, walking past Kyler.

Kyler watched Colby, walked into my office, shut the door, and took a seat.

I cleared my throat. "Did you need something?"

"I scheduled another meet-up from that dating site on Thursday."

"Please tell me it's not another tree hugger."

Kyler chuckled. "God, I hope not."

I giggled.

"No, this profile said the woman enjoys adventures."

"What kind of adventures?" I arched my brow.

"Hopefully, nothing that causes me pain."

"Good luck."

"Thanks." Kyler stood up and left my office.

I released the breath I was holding. Great. I get to watch another evening of train wreck dating.

On my way to speak to Mercedes, I heard voices coming from Rachel's office. I stopped and waited until I recognized one voice as Colby's. Why was he in Rachel's office?

Then Colby asked Rachel on a date. Ah, hell, no.

I opened the door as Rachel and Colby stared at me like deer caught in headlights. I wanted to rip Colby's arm off and beat him with it, but I kept my cool. So I gave him a job to keep him busy until the kids arrived.

Colby hurried past me. Once he left, I closed the door, took a seat, and talked to Rachel about Thursday. She seemed fine with helping me. But honestly, I was hoping the date was a bust so we could have dinner again.

After speaking to Rachel, I headed to check on Colby and ran into Mercedes.

"Hey, Kyler," Mercedes greeted me.

"Hey, Mercedes. I was on my way to check on Colby."

"What did you say to Colby?"

"Why?"

"He doesn't seem happy."

"Nothing. I just told him to set up the activity room with paint easels for the kids. I figured it would break up the monotony. Why?"
