Rachel
I decided to set aside whatever feelings for Kyler and focus on my work. Hopefully, my feelings would fade over time.
I arrived at the center, locked up my coat and purse, and walked toward Kyler's office. When I reached it, he had his head down. I knocked twice on the office door. He lifted his and smiled at me.
"What's on the agenda today?" I walked into his office and took a seat.
"The charity event is coming up." Kyler handed me a piece of paper. "That's a list of names to notify regarding their seats. We need a head count for food."
"I will send out invites to everyone."
"Sounds good."
"I'll get to work on this now." I stood up, walked to my office, and contacted people on the list.
While I called people to secure a head count, I asked them to donate items to the event to raffle off. Everyone that I had contacted had agreed. It amazed me how many people wanted to help.
When I finished, I sent a follow-up email to the people I contacted. Then I checked the calendar. We had Valentine's Day party scheduled for the kids. I jotted notes about decorations, Valentine's cards, and treats. Then I picked up the phone and called different businesses.
"Hi, my name is Rachel Moore. I'm calling from The Oakridge Center for Children. Would you be willing to donate treats for Valentine's Day party? You would? That would be great. Thank you."
I hung up and called the local newspaper. Someone answered after a few rings.
"Hi, my name is Rachel Moore. I'm calling from The Oakridge Center for Children. We're having a Valentine's Day party for the kids. We were wondering if you would like to cover the importance of adoption. You would? That would be amazing. Thank you."
My next call was to a local artist to design unique cards for the kids. After giving the person my spiel, they agreed. The next call was a store for decorations. The store agreed to donate decorations to the center.
I wanted the kids to have a lovely Valentine's Day because they deserved it.
*******
KylerI checked my emails and found several responses to the charity event and the Valentine's Day party for the kids. Different businesses were donating to the charity event, while some were supplying items for the party. What the hell?
My phone rang. I answered it. "Kyler Harper."
Kyler, I just received several calls from the family. They said they would donate to the center to help us. Did you have anything to do with this?
"No, it must have been Rachel."
Whatever Rachel is doing, have her keep it up. I've never seen so many positive responses.
"I will."
Talk soon.
I hung up, got up, and walked to Rachel's office. When I reached her office, she was getting off the phone.
I leaned against the doorframe with my arms crossed. "I see you took my list and ran with it."
"Oh, I hope you don't mind. I figured businesses could use the donated items as a tax write-off. If we raffle off baskets and gift certificates, people will win a prize while the center raises money. Every little bit counts."
I uncrossed my arms, walked to a chair, and sat down. "I think you're an asset to the center. You impressed my pops."
"I was doing what Mr. Harper hired me to do. It's not a big deal."
