Lumine awoke to the sound of a familiar voice reading to her from what seemed to be a children's book. She didn't open her eyes yet, letting her body adjust to being awake again. She doesn't know where she is- and she doesn't seem to register the fact that she's strapped into her bed. After a moment more of the storybook, the voice quiets, and Lumine finally opens her eyes.

Ouch. The light fucking hurts.

Lumine's eyes adjusted to the light streaming in through the windows. The person who was reading to her shuffled a bit more, and then the sound stopped. Their eyes met.

"Lumine!?" Amber rushed over to the side of her bed and gave her one of the tightest hugs she'd ever felt. Though, that might just be because Lumine felt significantly weaker.

"Lumine, how do you feel? Are you hungry? Do you need water? Oh shoot, I should just get Barbara.." Lumine shook her head, barely mustering up the strength. Every breath hurts.

Lumine tried propping herself up on some pillows but failed. Amber rushed over to help her, gently helping her sit up and lean forward just enough. Lumine felt disgusting. She and Amber stared at each other for a minute, neither of them wanting to look away. Finally, Lumine tried to ask a question.

"H..How l-long.. w-was.." Before she could finish, she keeled over at a coughing fit, before trying again with an even raspier voice than before. "How l-long.. w-was I o-out?" She barely choked. Amber had pulled up a chair to the side of her bed, book in hand.

"Almost two days.." She grimaced.

Lumine's eyes widened in shock. "T-two.. w-whole.. d-days!?" She said, coughing in between each word.

Amber nodded silently, pulling Lumine into another tight hug. Well still hugging, Amber began shaking, and Lumine realized she was crying.

"We thought... we thought we were too late. Your heart stopped and we couldn't get it back and even Albedo's potions wouldn't help and-" She said, in a shaky voice.

Lumine tried to smile but failed. "But, I'm.. I'm still here, and It's fine, and.." her voice trailed off to the sound of the door opening. Both she and Amber snapped back to reality. In the doorway stood Barbara, holding a small basket of various .. things. Medicine, presumably. She hadn't yet noticed that Lumine was awake, humming to herself and pouring various of the powders into a glass of water. She turned finally, and her eyebrows raised ever so slightly.

"Lumine! You're awake. Thank goodness, we were so worried. The whole city-" Barbara was cut off by Amber furiously shaking her head. Barbara seemed to understand whatever message Amber was trying to convey. Barbara gently padded over to Lumine's side.

"Outrider Amber, what was your first promise when I said you may read to Lumine?" Barbara asked, not rudely, but in an I-told-you-so way.

Amber met her eyes sheepishly. "To tell you if she woke up..."

Barbara's eyes narrowed. "And what did you not tell me?"

Amber responded, her voice now small, "that she woke up.."

Barbara shook her head. "How am I supposed to make sure she's alright if you don't tell me these things?" Amber began to answer, but Lumine's coughing cut them off. Barbara looked down at her patient, suddenly much more of a doctor than she was a few seconds ago.

She set to work, swirling one last powder into the water, before gently setting it down on Lumine's bedside table.

"Amber, can you help hold her mouth open?"

Lumine began to protest, but quickly realized she couldn't even open her mouth without pain. She slumped down a bit, inhaling sharply when that, too, hurt.
