Chapter 14

"Come on! We have to get to the shack before he transforms!" James yelled as they all ran. They got into the shack and turned into their animal forms.

Amaya hadn't done this in forever and she missed it. They watched Remus as he transformed. It looked like a painful process. Something licked Amaya's face and she turned her blue eyes to see Sirius in dog form. There was a howl and then moony sniffed each of them.

They all began running around the forest. Sirius led Amaya away from the rest. He turned back into a human and Amaya did the same.

"What-" Sirius put a hand over her mouth.

"Shh. Look over there." Amaya looked to where he was pointing and gasped.

"It's so pretty! I've never seen a unicorn." Sirius smiled.

A howl was heard and the two shared a worried look. They transformed and ran.

Amaya ran as fast as she could. 'What if something bad happened.'

They got to a clearing to find moony hunched up by a tree. Amaya began walking to him when she saw a big lump a few feet from him. Sirius ran over to it and froze. Amaya went to his side and couldn't believe her eyes.

James laid there in his stag form. He was covered in blood and had a bad gash on his stomach. He was breathing heavily.

Amaya looked at Moony and saw him watching them with sad eyes. She nudged Sirius with her nose getting his attention. She looked to Moony and back to James. She went over to moony and nudged him signaling for him to follow her. She began running and could hear his big paws following.

They got to the shack and moony curled up into a ball and fell asleep. Amaya turned back into a human and searched the room. Finally she found a shaking rat.

"Hey Peter, it's okay. Mooney's asleep." Peter turned back into a human.

"I was there when James got hurt. I couldn't save him."

"It's okay Peter. James is gonna be fine."

"I just couldn't handle if something horrible had happened. What if he died? I don't want him to die."

"He's going to be fine, especially since he has a friend like you."

"You really think so?" Amaya nodded.

Sirius watched out of the window of the hospital wing as the sun rose. He watched for Amaya worried that something bad had happened. Finally he spotted her with Remus and Peter. The two supported Remus' weight as they walked to the castle.

Sirius ran outside, leaving James' side for the first time that night. He took Remus from Amaya and they walked to the hospital wing in silence. As soon as they got there madam Pomfry began working on healing him.

"They both will need lots of rest. They should be able to return to their normal schedule on Monday."

Amaya dropped in the nearest chair. She was exhausted. Sirius sat on the floor and leaned against her legs. Amaya began playing with his hair. The two fell asleep.

Sirius woke up to heavy breathing. He looked around and saw Remus sitting up.

"Hey. How are you feeling?" Sirius asked.

Remus looked at him and had tears in his eyes. "James..."

"He's fine." Remus instantly relaxed.

"Sirius. I can't let you guys join me anymore. It's way too dangerous."

"Oh shut up moony. We're going to go every time because we won't let you go through that pain alone. We know what we're risking and it's worth it. So stop trying to push us away. You're not a monster."

"Thank you." Remus tried to sound satisfied but couldn't hide the worry in his voice.

"Have you guys noticed how Remus has been distant recently?" James asked.

"Yeah, ever since..." Sirius trailed off as Remus sat down on the farther end of the table.

"Do you think he's mad at us?" Peter asked.

"Well I'm not having it!" Sirius stood up, grabbed his food and walked towards Remus. Amaya followed.

"Hey Remus!" Amaya smiled at him.

"What are you guys doing?"

"Sitting by you." James said from behind Sirius.

"Why?"

"Because you're our friend. Remus, you can't get rid of us." Sirius said.

"Yeah, we signed the map." Peter said and James hit him over the head.

"Map?" Amaya asked curiously.

"Nothing darling." Sirius put his arm around Amaya.

"I know. I'm not trying to get rid of you guys." Remus said unconvincingly.

"Then why have you been avoiding us?" James asked and Remus' eyes shifted to James' stomach and back to his face. "You don't have to worry about me. I'm fine."

"Come on Remus, you can't break six years of friendship."

"I'm sorry, I'm just worried that I'll hurt you guys more. What if I ended up killing one of you guys."

"Remus, we will always be here for you. I promise." James said with a smile.
