There were once three goddesses- Din, Farore, and Nayru. These goddesses created the world in harmony. They decided it would be convenient to have one body to encompass them all and protect the world they had created. So the Golden Goddesses created Hylia, and with her, the Triforce. Each of the three segments of this Triforce represented one of the goddesses, and with them, the three most prominent forces in all the land- Power, Wisdom, and Courage.
Now, that's the main base of all Zelda games and the races lived together in harmony. These races were created by the Goddess Hylia and her mothers, Faron, Eldin, and Lanayru. Each respectively created tribes that would exist and worship each one of them separately. Faron, or Farore in some contexts- created the Zonai, a powerful tribe that uses mysterious magic to accomplish their goals. Lanayru, or just Nayru, created the Sheikah tribe, who used their immense knowledge to build breathtaking structures that could accomplish many tasks. Eldin, or simply Din, created the Gerudo, who were a powerful tribe of women that used their immense power to become the best warriors in the land. And so, Hylia dubbed this land Hyrule, and created one last race- The Hylians. A few hundred years after the creation of the four tribes, the land was prospering, however Nayru felt that she needed to further culminate their worship. She brought into the world the Zora, an aquatic race- an equal mix of Fish and Hylian. This work of art on Nayru's part was taken up by Din, who hatched from the volcanic Death Mountain the Gorons, with skin and will as hard as rock. Farore did not create a new race, but as the laws of nature demanded that all the goddesses be equal, the Zora grew beaks and wings and soon evolved into the Rito. And so, there were all the races of Hyrule.
Since the races were living so harmoniously, Din decided to spice things up for her entertainment. She used her Power to gift upon the one male ruler of the Gerudo a piece of the Triforce- specifically the Blessing of the Triforce of Power. Influenced by another being named Demise, who was purely evil, Ganondorf gathered the entire Gerudo army to take the world into his reins. They travelled far and wide, expanding their army and pillaging lands that did not surrender immediately.
At this point, we need to take a pause and talk about genetics for a second. Since Hylians and Gerudo have a dominant gene (Because they both were infused with Power, having Hylia and Din create them, ) whenever they breed with Zonai or Sheikah, the Hylian and Gerudo genes always dominate. This is why the Hylians are the most prominent race despite being basically powerless compared to the magic and technology of the other races. The Golden Goddesses must have known this, as they chose two Hylians to be their champions and hold their part of the triforce (See the next paragraph). They also must have deduced that it would be the most strategic plan of attack for the Gerudo army to target the Sheikah and Zonai, ultimately destroying them. So, even if their champion survived, its bloodline would not be passed down unless it had a dominant gene. They had to choose, as there were only two races with the dominant gene, but they couldn't exactly use the Gerudo, as that was Din's race and was therefore not compatible with their section of the Triforce.
Considering that, Farore and Nayru bestowed their pieces of the Triforce unto two totally random Hylians- who just happened to be perfect candidates for this battle. The goddesses spoke to them in their dreams and told them what they must do to defeat Din's champion, Ganondorf. Faron's chosen champion, Link, became Hyrule's greatest swordsman in a matter of days, and Zelda, Lanayru's champion, manifested a power that could seal Ganondorf away for good. Hylia favoured none of the champions, but instead created a gift for each- one Master Sword for the courageous Link, one child with the blood of Hylia that would become the wise Zelda, and one mighty steed for the powerful menace Ganondorf. Each gift would last forever, almost never being in need of replacement or repair. And so, since Zelda had the ichor of the Goddess, she now had a kingdom, and claimed Hyrule as her own as she took the reins from Ganondorf's grasp, sealing him away with the help of the gallant swordsman Link. Ganondorf was to never be seen again, until many years later.
Alas, history is doomed to repeat itself, so for countless years, the power of the goddesses was passed down from generation to generation, each time forcing Hyrule into a state of panic while the hero Link and the princess Zelda sealed away Ganon- as he was called- time and time again.
