Chrissy sat anxiously at her desk in first period that Monday morning. She twiddled her pink pen in her fingers, topped with a fuzzy pompom. Ms. O'Donnell stood in a floral dress at the front of the class. She was a tall thin women, with curly salt and pepper hair and cat-eye glasses. She was nearing the age of retirement and no longer had much patience. She was going on about their presentations that were due today. Chrissy's leg bounced as her eyes stared at the door. She kept checking the clock; 9:15am. It was Eddie's first day back since last week's suspension and he was late. Which was pretty typical for Eddie. He was rarely on time for class. Did she keep him up too late on the phone last night? Did he sleep in? Of course, he slept in- he always did.
"Now before we get started with your presentations, I want to remind everyone of –" Ms. O'Donnell's stern voice was interrupted.
The door flew open and Eddie bolted in like a bat out of hell. His hair was a disaster, his jeans were ripped to shreds at the knees, dirty Converse shoes and his iconic Hellfire shirt that had likely never seen an iron; Yup. He had definitely overslept.
"Ahh. Mr. Munson..." Ms. O'Donnell said with a sigh. "How kind of you to join us this morning."
He quietly closed the door behind him. "Sorry I'm late." He started to make his way down the row of desks but Ms. O'Donnell stopped him.
"I trust you spent your suspension productive last week?" She glanced at Jason Carver who sat at the back with a scowl on his face.
Eddie's tongue peeked out of his lips when he smiled and made eye contact with Chrissy. "Yeah... I kept pretty busy..."
Chrissy hid her face in her hands while she shook her head and smiled.
"Then it's safe to assume you completed your monologue? " Ms. O'Donnell shot back.
"Yup!" Eddie popped the P and continued to made his way to his desk. "Surely did, Miss."
"Then why won't you start us off."
Eddie paused before putting his backpack down. "What?"
Ms. O'Donnell cleared her throat. "Your monologue, Mr. Munson. Go ahead. The stage is yours." She beckoned her hand to the front of the class and took a seat at her desk.
Eddie rolled his eyes and muttered a "fine" under his breath. He dug through his binder rummaging through the pages. "fuck fuck fuck" he said to himself.
"Is there a problem, Edward?" Ms. O'Donnell was confident this would be another failed assignment on his part.
"No no, I got it... it's here somewhere. I'm sure of it." He was being honest when he said he completed it. He actually finished all the homework Chrissy dropped off for him. English, Calculus, Philosophy and History(the one other class they shared this semester). He was determined to graduate this year plus Chrissy's encouragement throughout the week was the real push he needed. He carelessly emptied his backpack. Flipping through notebooks and loose pieces of paper, he finally found it. A single wrinkly piece of paper tucked away in the bottom of his bag.
He held it up proudly. "See Ms. O? It's right here." He flattened it out against his stomach while he walked to the front of the room.
"Lovely." She said straight laced.
Public speaking wasn't a problem for Eddie. He had been preforming with his band since he was 12years old. Writing wasn't hard for him either. He wrote songs for Corroded Coffin all the time. He could have probably even managed an A (okay, B) in English class if he made any effort over the last year. He took a deep breath. Despite his tenacity in front of an audience, he suddenly felt butterflies in his stomach. He glanced up at Chrissy. She nodded some confidence at him and blew a tiny kiss. Eddie smiled at her then looked down at the paper in his trembling hands.
