Eddie sat in a chair on his front porch that afternoon. He had just lit up his tenth cigarette of the day as he inhaled a long pull. He looked down at his purple knuckles and shook his head as he exhaled the smoke. Part of him still furious he didn't do more damage to Jason. The other part of him ashamed he let his anger get the best of him right in front of Chrissy.
The door behind him opened as his uncle came out and handed him a bag of ice. Eddie took it from him and placed it on his hand.
"Boy, I don't know what I'm gonna do with you."
"I'm sorry.." he said quietly. "But that scumbag had it coming. You should have heard what he was saying about her."
Wayne took a few steps forward and leaned over the porch railing. "Well, she must be pretty special for you to risk graduation over."
Eddie had briefed him last week about their special Friday night and when he saw her at the mall. Wayne couldn't help notice the increase in phone calls lately either.
Suddenly, an approaching car captured both their attention. An '85 Oldsmobile Supreme slowly pulled into their driveway. At first Eddie assumed it was Jason or one of his goons coming for their revenge. But then he noticed the blonde ponytail. He ashed out his cigarette with his foot on the ground and stood up.
Chrissy got out of the car carrying a heavy tote bag. She smiled softly and approached the porch. Wayne was the first to speak. "Now whats a nice lookin' girl like you doing on this side of town?' he said warmly.
She smiled. "You must be Mr. Munson." She stepped up the stairs, put down the tote bag and offered her hand for him to shake. "My name is Chrissy Cunningham."
"Now now now, no need for formal titles 'round here." He accepted the hand shake. "Just call me Wayne."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Wayne. Eddie has told me such wonderful things about you."
"Oh did he now?" Wayne looked over at Eddie who smiled sheepishly. "Well, I'll leave you to my dumbass nephew. I'm sure you two have plenty to talk about."
Wayne turned around and headed towards the door. Before he walked in, he leaned over to Eddie and said not-so-subtly, "She's even prettier than you described..."
"Ok thanks, bye Uncle Wayne!" His words were rushed. Wayne closed the door behind him. "Chrissy.. I'm so-"
Chrissy threw herself into his arms. Eddie could have melted at her touch. He wrapped his big arms around her tightly.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for you to see me like that." he continued.
Chrissy squeezed him tighter. "Eddie, no one has ever stood up for me like that before."
He looked down at her as their eyes met. He moved her bangs out of her eyes and kissed her forehead. "As long as I'm around, I'll never allow that prick to get away with treating you like that."
She hugged him again then pulled back a step and took his hand in hers. She looked down at the swollen bruised knuckles. "Does it hurt?" she asked sweetly.
"It looks worse than it feels." he said as he stretched out his fingers.
"Will you still be able to play at the bar tomorrow night?"
Eddie looked at her quickly. "You remembered." He said tenderly.
"Of course, I remembered! The Hide Out, on Tuesdays."
Eddie sat back down in the chair. He pulled her arm gently inviting her to sit on his lap. She obliged and sat on his knees sideways. "It'll be fine. Another day of ice and Advil and I'll be good to go."
She rested her head on his shoulder and lightly traced his sore fingers with her soft finger tips. "You know, it was kinda.... hot, actually."
Eddie's eye lit up. "Oh really?" he chuckled. "I wasn't sure you'd even talk to me again."
"Are you kidding!?" Their eyes met. "You knocked Jason to the ground! He's had that coming for years. I loved every minute of it." She kissed his cheek. "My hero..."
"You missed." he said softly.
Chrissy smiled sweetly before kissing Eddie's mouth. First quick and softly, and then slow and filled with passion. Eddie ran his fingers through her hair.
"Oh!" Chrissy broke away. 'I almost forgot." She leaned over and dragged the bag over to his feet. "I stopped by all your classes and spoke to your teachers. They agreed to send me home with your assignments and homework. If you hand everything in by next Monday you won't lose any marks."
Eddie looked at the tote bag filled with text books, papers and binders then back to Chrissy. He was dumbfounded. "Chrissy... thank you so much."
"Eddie, you're graduating this year. I'll make sure of it."
He smiled and kissed her again. "86 baby..."
Chrissy kissed him back and then started to get up. Eddie pulled her back down on his lap. "Woah woah woah, where are you going?"
She giggled and then sighed. "I have to go to work. My shift starts in half an hour."
Eddie protested. "Nooo... I can't let you leave me. I'm a fallen knight....I need m'lady to stay and take care of me." He held up his hurt hand like a dog with a sore paw and pouted his lower lip.
She laughed. She gingerly held his hand and left kisses on it. "I'm sorry..." She stood up. They hugged each other once more before she skipped down the steps to her car. Eddie followed her to the edge of his porch. He rubbed the back of his neck nervously and took a deep breath.
"Hey uh.. Chrissy....one last thing..."
She turned around and faced him as she opened up the driver's side door. "What's up?"
"Would you... do ya think.... Would you wanna come out tomorrow night? The Hide Out? We play at 8pm."
Chrissy smiled her sweet smile at him. "I would love to."
