Chapter 1:
Bells rang on the busy downtown street as snow trickled from the winter sky. Lights flickered in store windows seeking attention from on goers and mesmerizing young children. I approached the door of Macy's and curiously walked in. Christmas carols filled my ears with a cheerful ring. I wandered toward the jewelry section, not determined to find a gift but willing to look as it was still early December. The click of my high heel boots on the cold tile floor caught the attention of the sales assistant behind the counter organizing the newly arrived merchandise.
"Good morning! Are you finding everything okay?" She warmly greeted me with a heartfelt smile.
"Oh I'm just looking." I replied not showing any sign of emotion.
As I peered into the glass my eyes gazed upon several beautiful watches and necklaces all marked down on sale for the holidays. My eyes averted up to see a tall, blonde haired boy with sparkling blue eyes. He was fairly attractive but I was quickly focused back on the jewelry again. I saw a lovely watch made of gold tone stainless steel. The rim was engraved with small ocean waves and an outline of galleon was placed in the center under the hands of the clock. I immediately thought of my father who had a great love for ships.
"Excuse me. I would like to buy this watch." I spoke.
"Okay one moment," the cashier replied compassionately. "That will be $152.37 please."
I gasped under my breath not expecting such a costly gift but had no thoughts of leaving without it. I paid the expense and swiftly turned around where I was greeted face to face with the mysterious blonde again. After getting a better look at him, I was awed. The eyes I thought were a casual blue were a misty, crisp blue; as sharp as ice like something I had never witnessed. His smile was saintlike and inviting but instead of starting a conversation I just walked away wanting nothing to do with him. Once outside, back into the cold air, my feet cautiously began walking down the concrete stairs. A repetitive staccato bell rang in my ears and I spotted and old man in a red santa hat standing patiently by a red bucket.
"Merry Christmas! Would you like to donate to the Salvation Army?" He politely asked.
I shook my head no and continued walking while fingering the loose change in my pocket. This was my money and I needed just as much as they did. My focus was blown over to the other side of the street where the familiar blue eyes and blonde hair struck me with an overwhelming presence. He gracefully strolled across the crosswalk to my side of the street. I began hypothesizing how he could get over their when he was behind me in line. I would have surely noticed.
My feet moved toward the crowded sidewalk to carry me back to my apartment. The fresh snow proposing a treacherous journey making my foot slip out from under me. My balance diminished as a small shriek escaped my cold lips. As I prepared to hit the ground a masculine yet soft hand grabbed my lower arm. I turned around and gasped at the sign of the mysterious man once again.
"Careful there," the words fluttered out of his mouth. "I'm Niall."
"E-Eve." I stuttered.
"You might want to slow down next time!" The words danced off of his tongue with ease.
I just nodded with agreement. He winked and continued in the other direction. As I now very cautiously walked home, my mind couldn't get away from the persistent thought of the boy, Niall. I quickly unlocked the door and set my bags upon the table as I reminisced on the recent events. How Niall had gotten from one place to another so motionlessly and how he seemed to know I was going to fall. I didn't leave out the very possible theory that i was being stupid and was over reacting either.
