THREE MONTHS EARLIER
'That's relatively late...is someone picking you up?' He seems so worried.
'Nope. It's just a twenty minute walk. If you're worried then call me and I'll talk to you the whole way,' I explain. 'I'm almost certain I'm off at seven so if you call me, I'll pick up.'
'I'll promise I'll call you.' He swears. He's so concerned, it's cute. 'Stay safe okay? When it's seven over there it'll be like six or five over here so it won't even be late for me.'
'Okay I'll wait for you call then. I'm almost there so I gotta go,' I don't really need him on the phone with me but I want to relive his stress. That and I always walk down this road after work. It isn't busy so I never have to worry about passing cars. 'I love you,'
'I love you too,' He sounds groggy but he says it back anyways. Cutting the call I stretch my hands behind my back before pushing the door of the building open.
''Hey Brylan!' I recognize Lilahs voice.
Waving my hand to her when I see her I go to hug her. This time last year I hated her. She wasn't the nicest person when she still went to our school but ever since she started hanging out with Alex she changed. As if she's an entirely different person now. Whenever I ask Alex what happened he won't exactly tell me so I stopped pestering him about it.
She's homeschooled now but I still see her around so I spoke to her. It's the main reason on why I work here in the first place. She told me they were hiring when I mentioned how I wanted to fill my weekdays with something new so I checked it out. Apparently it's a bookstore that's owned by one of her family members and I fucking love it. It's so cute and I'm shocked I haven't noticed it before. It's upsetting how it doesn't have as much publicity despite its collection. You could find anything here. A
lot of the people who come in are regulars who were smart enough to stop by and notice how everything is half the price of mainstream bookstores with a larger selection.
'Your name tag is in the locker by the way, you forgot it last time,' she smiles so I thank her. I was trying to find it last week and I didn't know where I put it. 'Also when you go grab it can you bring the trolley? The smaller one with just the three tiers. It should already have new books in them.'
'New books?' I raise my eyebrows with a grin on my face but she just nods. She knows how much I love flicking through them as I organize them on the shelves so she leaves the task to me.
Pivoting my body I'm quick to rush into the back room. Finding the trolly I squat down to see they're stacked. When she said there were new books she wasn't kidding. Although a few of them are just replaceables for sold out copies, I recognize a few newer titles. I practically had to memorize this store back to front in order to be able to assist customers with book stock and where everything is. It wasn't a hard task since it was something I didn't mind doing it but it's surely eased my job.
