The original copy for this chapter deleted itself? I didn't even notice until months later but here's a rewrite! I tried to make it as similar as possible <3
Kneading at the back of my neck, she's right. I need to tell my parents. I don't want to go but they'd kill me if they found out I made that decision without speaking to them first.'Hey mom?' I knock on the wall.
She's stood in the mess of the living room. For the past couple days since Katie graduated, she's been relatively focused on redesigning and changing things up so she's throwing away old decor and putting up the new. I think it's something that makes her happy because she gets all focused and dismissive once she starts.
'Hm.' She barely acknowledges me. Her focus is pinned on a hanging frame she can't quite reach so she begins to drag a stool over. I get to her before she can climb up so I can help. Taking it down for her she's looking at me now. 'Thank you,'
Turning away she places it next to the millions of other frames she claims she wants to repaint a beige color. 'Is dad here by any chance.' I crack my knuckles uncomfortably. 'I just wanted to talk about something—If you're busy it's fine though. I can come back later...or maybe never if that's better for you?'
Sensing my unease she takes a quick glance at me to make sure. 'Is everything okay?'
'It's just about basketball.'
Pausing she stops what she's doing. 'Why? Are you hurt?' In less than a second she's facing me. Patting me down she pulls at the sleeves of my sweater to check my arms. 'Did you injure yourself?'
'No no.' I clear my voice, 'it's just I uh. I got another offer so I thought you'd want to know.'
'That's great Damon!' She squeezes my arms. 'But why do you look so upset? Is it not one that you wanted? Is there something wrong with it? You know how people can be with entry levels. They leech you for less than your worth so just talk to them about what's upsetting you,'
'No they're giving me more than I'm worth.' I take a shallow breath. 'It's a good team. They're very selective so I'm just worried that um...'
'How much are they giving you? For your level at least?' He waits for me to respond but I just sheepishly cross my arms. 'One hundred thousand?'
'Like...I don't know...triple that or something.'
'Three hundred?' She raises her eyebrows in shock.
'No I didn't mean literally triple it. It's more than that.' I squeeze at my arms. 'Maybe double that then add more.' I act as if I haven't had the contract swayed in my face by Josephine Walker at least a hundred times.
'Are you serious? Don't lie to me Damon.' She's so excited for me. I don't know why I would expect any other reaction.
'Obviously that's just the figure before taxes and things though.' My attempt to lessen what it actually is, is a joke. 'I don't know if I want to go.'
