Looking at our little group, you had to admit that you were worried. Last night was not the best first night on the island. It showed on everyone's face. All of them look exhausted and anxious. Except for you guides, Torako and Muna. Both of them seemed as energized as when you meet them on the beach yesterday. As horrible as yesterday was, you can't let it affect your job today.
Forcing on a smile, you looked over at Macy. Noticing her study, you for a minute before smiling at you. Maybe with at least a few of you in a decent mood the exploration won't be too bad.
"Now, we go this way." Torako decided, then held a hand up before you all could move, "Do not leave the path. Ever."
Nodding at his serious warning, you locked arm with Jake as your group started walking. You can tell he's still worried. Actually, you don't think he's stopped since the village outcast tried to get you last night.
"Hey, you, okay?" You asked, earning a strange look from him before he gave you a small smile.
"Yeah. I'll be fine." He chuckled, playfully bumping his hip to yours.
"Good, I would hate to throw you into the first creek we see." You teased, knowing you were making him feel better.
Your plan worked too, because he laughed at that. For at least a few hours, the mood over the group brightened up. All of you were able to take make descriptions of anything new you saw. Jake would take a few examples of the flowers or leaves that impressed him. You and Macy would discuss and take pictures of new creatures you would find. Even Ryan took a couple of samples of rocks.
It was close to noon by the time, your group found a river to take a break by. Smiling at the rough sketches you drew; you downed the last of your water and refilled your bottle. Torako had assured you all that it was safe. You're sure not going to question a native.
"Oh, you are very good." Looking over your shoulder, you gave a small smile to Muna.
He was the smallest of your group, but you know better than to judge someone based on their height. Holding your journal out more for him to see, you flipped through it. Answering questioned he would have of the different animals.
"You've been everywhere." He sighed, looking down at the river, "Here we stay on the path or in the village. To scared of being forsaken like the cursed ones."
"The cursed ones?" You frowned, suddenly recalling the story Jake told you last night, "You mean the Nakerans?"
He quickly covered your mouth as he looked around in clear fear. Confused, you looked around too, but only saw the others talking. You didn't even see a bird in the surrounding jungle trees. Clearly that word distresses Muna though.
"You don't say that." He whispered, "It's believed to summon them. Very bad luck."
"Oh, okay." You nodded, while lowering your tone to match his.
You were going to ask more about it but went quiet when Ryan blew a whistle. He's been blowing it nearly every hour. It makes you want to shove it down his throat.
"Since we have a lot of ground to cover, we're going to split up." He announced, making Muna and Torako protest.
You couldn't each of them individually over each other, but you definitely hear the word danger. Ryan only held up a hand to silence them. A stern looks on his face.
"This is not for debate. Macy, Torako, and I will go towards the mountain on the island towards the North." He decided, "Jake, (Y/N), and Muno? Mune? Whatever your name is. You'll take the beach towards the South."
He started walking off before anyone could protest again. You could see Torako and Muna exchange worried glances. Something is bothering them, but for some reason they're not telling everyone else. Then again, Ryan's behavior is enough to worry anyone. Frowning at Macy, you gave her a small wave as she and Torako followed Ryan.
"I guess we should get going?" Jake questioned as if he wasn't sure.
Giving a nod, you gathered your stuff. Felling a shiver run down your spine. Gripping your journal tighter, you glanced around. It feels like there are eyes watching you. You almost felt like prey being stalked by a predator. However, Jake and Muna didn't seem bothered by anything. It's probably just the jungle and being forced into a smaller group. Those reassurances didn't stop you from staying close to Jake and Muna when you walked though.
The feeling of being watched never left. The few hours you walked the feeling only seemed to increase. When Muna decided that it was time for another break in a small clearing, you stayed in the center. As far from the trees as you could. Keeping your back to the river just for safe measures.
"(Y/N), are you okay?" Nearly jumping at the question, you looked over at Jake.
Both of them were watching you in concern. Seems you weren't the best as hiding your worry. If it's something in the jungle, the best thing you can think of is to get back to the safety of the village. Shaking your head, you looked down.
"I just have a feeling we're being watched." You whispered, noticing the change in them instantly.
Muna was looking around with a grip on his spear. Jake looked around too in suspicion as if he was ready for a fight. Both of them glancing at each other before nodding. Seems in the short time your group of scientists have been on the island; Jake has already formed a strong friendship with Muna.
"We head back to the village after break." Muna decided, making you nod.
It made you feel a bit better. Focusing on your snack, you would glance at the boys occasionally. At one point taking a double look at Jake when you saw a flash of shiny blue appear on his shoulder.
"Jake, you have a burrow blue legged tarantula on you." You wanted, grabbing his arm to calm him down before he could jump up.
You know he's scared of spiders, so you want to handle this before he decides to scream. Holding your hand on his shoulder, you let the spider climb on. Playing with it by letting it run over your hand and arm.
"He's harmless." You assured Jake, who looked like he was going to pass out.
Even Muna seemed amused at his reaction. Shaking your head, you took a couple of steps towards the jungle to let the spider go. Watching in crawl under a bush, before you saw an unfamiliar snake tail there.
Drawing another rare creature before you go back won't hurt anyone. Grabbing the tail, you gave it a hesitant pull. Frowning when it tried to go further into the jungle.
"Jake, I found a snake. Can you help me?" You asked, making room for him as he came over.
He grabbed it just under your hand, before you both pulled. Managing to drag it out quite a bit. Enough so that you had to wrap your arms around it to pull again.
"It must be an anaconda of some kind." You huffed, giving it another pull.
"(Y/N), Jake, stop!" Blinking over at Muna's scream, you were startled enough that you dropped it.
You had felt that the snake moving towards you, so you knew the damage was done. From its size you know you don't want to be near the snake when it comes out. Especially since you think you made it mad. Muna sounded so scared when he yelled though. Turning back to the snake, you gasped and backed up faster with Jake. The village outcast from last night was glaring at you. However, his bottom half was the snake that you had been pulling on. From the absolute fury on his face, you knew it was a mistake to do that.
