Chapter 2

Explain

The smell hit Ingo before it hit Emmet. The smell of the town nearby. It smelled a lot like firewood being burned. Which meant food, and a warm bed.

Emmet held his stomach as they walked. He wasn't used to walking long distances right now. Technically Ingo could call Lady Sneaseler out, but he wasn't sure if this place had pokemon, and seeing one could cause problems.

Emmet sighed as he sat down, and closed his eyes. Obviously demanding a rest. Running his sleeve over his forehead and jumping clear out of the spot feeling a cold hand on his back. He opened his eyes to see his brother looking over his wound.

Ingo looked up at his twin apologetically. Emmet sighed, his brother always had colder hands, which meant his circulation was poor. The cold air around them probably didn't help at all.

Emmet sighed, sitting back down and looked up at his little sister as Ingo changed the bandages. Lake hadn't said one word since they got there, her throat must have still hurt her. Emmet decided to try something. He had noticed something about Lake a few weeks into her being adopted. She knew some sign language, but just enough to get by. He had found out that one of her foster parents (Before she was killed) had been partially deaf. So Lake picked up on it.

He knocked on the side of the stump. Lake slowly turned to look at him. The sign he made to her was to ask if she was okay. The reaction from her told him that she not only understood, but she didn't really want to talk to him.

"Now would be a good time to explain to her what's going on." Ingo told his brother, Emmet sighed and ran his fingers over his face. Geez they were cold. Was it really that cold outside or did he have a fever? He sighed pulling his shirt back down and walked over to Lake.

In Emmets head he wasn't sure how Lake was going to understand this. She was only 9 years old, she wasn't that smart...right? Nah, not yet.

He sat down on the grass in front of her.

Lake wasn't sure what her brother wanted, technically she wasn't sure why he was taking the time to even speak to her, much less look at her. Yet here he was, and he had that sad look on his face.

"Hey Lake, listen...um...I'm not...okay...in my head..." Okay...that's obvious. He's talking to her, of course something was wrong. Oh no...did she do something wrong again? Her eyes began to well up again. She turned to look at Ingo. She reached out for him, but rather than him picking her up, he sat behind her and whispered into her ear.

"Its okay, Lake. Emmets trying to tell you something." He said gently.

"I have...um...multiple personalities. Um...it means sometimes a personality pops up from time to time to protect me when I feel alone, or abandoned." He looked up at Ingo. "Like I felt when Ingo left me while I wasn't feeling too good. I thought...I thought he was going to leave me there...alone, injured, unable to function in the middle of nowhere..." He gritted his teeth rubbing his head. "Even you left..." He sighed as he ran his fingers over the back of his neck.

So he felt betrayed? Abandoned? Alone...

Yup this was her fault.

"Lake, he and I go to therapy too because of these issues. Emmets been working on these emotions, but I'm afraid he's going to be like this for a little while. If he's ever extra wordy with you, or hurts your feelings the best thing to do is..." He reached out and pinched Emmets arm.

"OW!" Emmet rubbed his arm. "That hurt..."

"Of course it did, you're a jerk..." Ingo was angry with him, uh oh...that means he'd get a lecture tonight while Lake was asleep. Why would he lecture him? Because he wasn't going to leave him...not again.

"So do you forgive me?" Emmet asked. Lake wasn't sure what to say to that. It wasn't like she could say anything anyways. She tried, but the only thing that came out was a squeak. Lake looked almost downcast.

Emmet felt horrible about that, it was his fault that she lost her voice.

"Well come on, we'll talk about it more once we're under a roof. I can smell food being roasted so I expect there is a small town nearby." Ingo took Lakes hand and helped his brother up with the other.
