Chapter 23

Happiness

Lake was scared, she couldn't breath, and the water was dark. The only thing she could depend on was the hands she held and where they took her. She was still a very small person and holding her breath as long as she had was a feat in itself.

The blue light grew closer and closer as they swam down. Why did it seem so far down? Was the light running from them? Was that Volo guy trying to keep them from leaving?

Oh she was getting dizzy, and she couldn't hold her breath anymore. She thrashed a bit before feeling one of her brothers pull her close. She looked into the shockingly gray eyes of her master.

He had never done something like this before. He sent her his plan mentally and before she had time to compute what that meant he fit his mouth of hers and pushed air into her lungs.

Oh geez this was weird, and gross. But her head wasn't as dizzy anymore at least. He pulled back looking at her. His hand rested on the back of her head checking to make sure she was okay now. He held her close as they kept swimming.

Their heads broke through to the portal. They didn't fall, it wasn't hot, it wasn't cold either. The room smelled musty and old. It was dark, the only light that showed through was at the ceiling of the cave.

"You okay now kitten?" Emmet panted rubbing her back. She couldn't help but wheeze as she nodded. She hated having asthma. "Sorry about that odd...breathing method." He sighed as he pulled himself out of the water. "It's the only way I could think to make sure you were okay." He leaned against the cavern wall and sighed as he watched his brother do the same.

Lake shook her head as she watched Ingo sit back running his fingers through his wet hair.

"We are going on a vacation when we get home. Just us, a beach, sun, and relaxing." Ingo sighed, before jumping out of his skin at his brother's sudden jump and run. Ingo looked at where Emmet was pointing as he clung to Lake.

"F...Face..." He pointed at the wall. Ingo turned to indeed see a face on the other side of the wall. Ingo pulled out his pokeball and let Chandelure out. The pokemon fluttered high over his head, all four of them looked upon a cavern made entirely of emeralds.

"Oh wow..." Lake whispered as she looked up at the ceiling where there were a few sunbeams shining through, but not enough to impact the light. But doing so she could see beings trapped within. Each one looked to be sleeping.

Her fingers ran over the stones as she looked around. She stopped in front of a hole. The glass was shattered and it looked like it had been like that for some time. She touched the spot and gasped pulling back.

"Lake?" Emmet and Ingo called out having been on the other side looking over the Windalyns.

They both stopped just short of Lake, each one looking worried. Lake wasn't sure why. She turned and gasped seeing Volo standing on the other side of her. He grabbed her up before she could run to her brothers. She cried out in protest. She didn't like him, and he was too close. He grabbed her head and put his cheek to hers rather harshly petting her.

"Oh so much effort it took for you to protect this little thing." He made a soft tsk noise and shook his head. "You know nothing of this species do you? Did you even read the book I gave to you?" Volo asked, running his fingers over Lakes cheek feeling the soft tears running down her face. Emmet could feel her fear.

"What are you getting at Volo? We already know about her blood."

"Oh yes, the blood is a bonus I'm sure, but...she's far too young and she's incredibly sick. She'll last two more years maybe. Her lungs are already rejecting her. Her eyes are just going to keep getting worse. She'll die...unless you do something you don't want to do."

Volo grabbed Lakes head and picked her up bodily, pushing her into the hole that she had found. Oddly the size was just right for her.

Emmet felt the pain, but the bright light that enveloped the cavern caused both Ingo and himself to turn away and shield themselves.

Finally when the light began to ebb were they able to turn around and see. Lake was within the stone, and Volo was gone.
