Chapter 29
Ache
What to do?
Ingo looked on at the new person in the room, in her arms was the infant. Her ear pressed to the door. Ingo turned slowly, his head still hurting. Lake lay in Emmets arms. Her face pressed to his chest. She mumbled that the light was way too bright and Emmet agreed.
"Who's idea was it to drink when connected to an infant?" infant? He looked at Lake and then up at the new female.
"We didn't drink on purpose. We were forced to. If we didn't, they were going to kill her." Ingo sighed, rubbing Lakes back as she curled tighter and groaned. She slowly stood up and wobbled over to a trash can and promptly threw up.
"This is a good sign." The female said. Emmet sat up and rubbed his temples.
"Why is it good? She's throwing up nothing, we're the ones drunk." Emmet said as he opened one eye to look at her. "Who's she?"
"I do not have a name. He has not given me one."
Emmet slowly looked up at his brother who pinched the bridge of his nose again. "Ingo...?"
"It had to have happened when we were fighting the guards. I was bleeding a lot." he touched the wound and hissed only to feel a gentle hand on his.
"Don't..." Ingo looked up into the eyes of the female. He knew he'd have to call her something, it's not proper to just call her 'hey you.' or 'girl'
"Your name is Avari." Ingo rubbed his head.
There was a small giggle from the floor. "Ava..." Lake smiled as she tried to get up, but only succeeded in moving her shoulders and then started laughing.
"Ava it is then." The woman said as she sat the baby down near the back inside one of the drawers that was stock full of aprons. It was a good makeshift bed. "Stay there cub, fighting isn't a good place for you."
"Why do we have a baby?" Emmet was talking incredibly slowly. Ingo rolled his eyes and jumped when he heard something hit the door.
"Come on, we have to get out of here." Ingo picked up Lake and handed her to Ava. Lake looked at Ava and then leaned forward.
"You're a..." She turned and looked at Ingo, nearly falling forward as she did. "She's a thingy!" She called out. Lake pulled back again and looked at her and then pointed over her shoulder and then looked at her brothers. Both of which were struggling to try to get the window open.
"Wait..." Emmet stopped and looked at Lake as she put her head down on Ava's shoulder. It seemed really heavy for some reason. "He's one?" He asked.
"I thought that was super rare?" Ava looked at Emmet and nodded.
"It's because they kill females. It's like they're born with a deep desire to kill us." She pulled Lake closer. "Females are born with a desire to nurture, care, we're created and designed to care for each other because we aren't born with a family." She ran her fingers over Lakes' hair.
"Oh my gosh Ingo..." Emmet leaned over, putting his head on his brother's shoulder. "I think you accidentally created a babysitter."
"What!?" Ava yelled. "I do not sit on babies!" she pointed to the infant sleeping soundly in the makeshift cot.
Lake suddenly jumped back and backpedaled away from Ava. the female Windalyn blushed and looked down at herself. It happened again. A loud growling noise.
"She's hungry." Ingo told them. "When this is all over I think it's best if we all ate something. I'm afraid Emmet and I got drunk so easily since we haven't eaten since midday yesterday. We went to the festival to eat and ended up getting kicked out of town."
"Kicked...out of town? How?"
"Because I'm a Windalyn..." Lake looked apologetic and then started to cry.
