Chapter 13
Nope
Both Ingo and Emmet hated to leave Lake in an area on her own. Leaving her by herself seemed like a bad idea. Yet here they were both sitting outside the bathroom waiting for their charge to finish bathing before they themselves took their turn and honestly that was even worse. Both of them tried to make it seem like they weren't rushing. Ingo wanted to sit in there and take a good soak. The fact that it took them 10 minutes to wash and dry killed them both.
Both parentals came out of the bathroom expecting the house to be burning down and/or a huge evil pokemon having broken in and was snacking on their little Lake.
What they saw was almost too cute to really have words for. Lake sat down in the Lady Sneaslers lap. The female pokemon pointed out things in a children's book and spoke to her in her own language.
"Lake? Can you...understand her?" Ingo asked. He himself could understand the basic structure of what the pokemon was telling him, but nothing more.
"No...but I know what she's pointing at so I think it's what she's saying." She pointed to a picture and repeated what the noble said to her. "I'm learning." She giggled. The Sneasler beamed at her, almost like Lake said her first words.
Ingo chuckled and patted his nobles arm.
"Good work." He complimented her. She leaned up and bumped her head to his. Lake giggled and yawned.
"Alright Angel." Emmet picked up Lake and walked toward the bedrooms. He didn't want to do this...actually he wasn't sure how he was going to do this when they got home. He walked into the kids room and waited for Ingo to pull back the blankets and looked down at the little girl who climbed up into the bed.
"Alright, get some sleep." Ingo leaned in, kissing her crown, and Emmet did the same. "Good night." They both said in unison. Lake smiled as she closed her eyes. Her mind drifted off.
She woke up, her heart pounding in her chest. But why? What got her so scared? She heard the noise again. She curled into a little ball, the howling of the wind at the window, and the slight whoot from the owl not too far off. Where was she? Oh, this was the farm house...she uncurled herself, looking around the unfamiliar place, the shadows began to look like things, beings, people...stretching across the wall. The tired mind of a child can play tricks. She gasped as she squeaked and climbed out of bed. Her feet touched something furry on the floor and she screamed.
Running out of the room and down the stairs taking one look around the room seeing glowing eyes and movement. She ran into the kitchen, and climbed under the sink into the cabinet and closed the doors.
She heard panicked voices. She could hear her heart beating. She covered her mouth trying her best not to breathe too loud, the wheeze was beginning to get louder. Light headed...
She gasped trying to hold her breath as she heard someone come into the kitchen. She could see the flicker of the candle under the cabinet near her toes. Trying to stifle a cough that had begun to pop up. Her head was pounding and she had to breathe. She tried to slowly take a breath, but it came in a gasp. A very hard and painful breath.
Wait...no...don't...
The cabinet opened slowly and she could see the silhouette of the person on the other side. She tried to push herself farther back into the cabinet.
"Lake?" She stopped panicking and she turned to look back up at the face.
"Get the inhaler..." Lake looked up at the man as he reached out, pulling her from the small space. Her head swam and she couldn't help her head resting on Ingo's shoulder.
"We don't have it." Emmet tried to fish through the bag. Dumping it out onto the floor and sifting through it all again.
"Emmet..." Lake felt Ingo put his cheek onto her head.
Emmet nodded and sat down on the floor with them. Emmet was better at this anyways.
Emmet pulled Lake to him and held her close.
"Alright Lake...close your eyes, and listen to my breathing." He whispered. Lake had tears rolling down her face with her efforts to breathe.
Emmet felt it, but he dare not say anything out loud. It was like a small spark in the back of his mind. It was a curious action. If he had blinked he would have missed it. A connection between himself and Lake.
Within Lake it felt something similar to having a tv turned on. Something blossomed within her. She felt something new and almost happy. Then realization struck her like a bolt of lightning.
'Blood activates the bond.' Lake had held Emmets while he was wounded. She was tasked with holding him still while he was covered with blood. She had touched his blood. Even though the blood never touched her crystal, it touched her directly. The link would be strong. She pulled back to look at Emmet. He nodded to her, touching his heart. So this was how life would handle this for her. Ingo was her unofficial father, and Emmet was her pokemon trainer. Her Master.
