My alarm chimes louder than I thought possible the next morning. I really don't want to get up. I've spent all night thinking, and processing everything that happened the day prior.
Streber. The "weird" vampire homo, as they used to call him, is now my only real friend.
And he's honestly the sweetest person I've ever met. And he's passionate about what he likes. I like it when people are like that. Like they don't have to be ashamed of what they enjoy. I've always wished I was more like that.
I don't want dad to get angry that I'm still in bed, so I eventually turn off my alarm, throw on a light blue hoodie, and head to the bathroom to get cleaned up.
I walked past my brother's room, noticing he slept with his door open, and that he still hadn't gotten up. Dad would wake him at any moment, I was sure of that.
After cleaning up, I headed downstairs with my backpack in hand. My mom was in the kitchen, checking something on her phone.
"Hey. mom." I greeted, sounding dryer than I wanted to. She doesn't look up. "Hey Kevin."
Something was definitely going on. "Is everything okay, mom?" I ask. She immediately put her phone in her back pocket and said. "Yeah, of course!" She exclaimed, in a tone that was either extremely enthusiastic or extremely agitated.
"That's good." I sighed, defeated. I'm not going to force her to fess up to anything. It's not worth it to fight her.
Just then, Jack runs downstairs at an ungodly speed. I could tell he was woken up by Dad.
I'm impressed he hasn't fallen down the stairs and died yet. But it's bound to happen at some point.
I grab my lunch and wait for him to stumble into the kitchen and gather himself. He's my ride to school today, so I have to rely on him not being dead for the time being.
He opens the kitchen door and gathers himself. I give him a concerned look.
"Jack, are you okay?" I asked him, already knowing what he was going to say.
"Don't worry about it, Kev." He muttered after a moment of hesitation.
Okay, this is getting strange. Something is going on with everybody. There's something they aren't telling me.
"Kev?" Jack asks. "Are you okay?" I realized I had spaced out for a moment. "I'm fine. We should probably get going."
Jack looks at mom, then back at me. He sighs and smiles. "Alright, let's go." He grabs his keys off of the counter. "Bye, mom." He says, seemingly troubled about something. I wave goodbye to mom, still worried about whatever was going on.
But I don't ask. I never do.
