I brought the tiny kitten into the vet's office, sort of in a panic. The kitten was hurt and malnourished.
Eventually, a veterinarian brought the kitten into a small office resembling a fun-sized hospital room.
After a moment of examination, she turned to me and asked, "Sir, is she your cat?"
"No, I just found her on the street. She seemed like she needed help, so I brought her here." I responded.
She nodded. "Alright, we'll be running a few tests, and we'll be back to you in around 30 minutes. Just wait in the waiting room until then."
"Alright, thanks, ma'am..."
~~~~~~
About a half hour later, the vet asked me to come back into the room.
"How does she look?" I asked.
"She's in stable condition. She just wasn't getting much food, that's all." She picked up the kitten and put her in my hands.
The small kitten looked directly into my eyes. With a sense of wonder, yet helplessness.
"Now, you have two options, sir. You can give her to the shelter, or adopt her."
I smiled at the kitty. "I'll adopt her."
~~~~~
Once I arrived home with her, and cat food, a bowl for her, a bed for her, and some cat toys, I was settled on a name.
"Your name will be Lydia." I said proudly, picking her up. She's so cute, and small, and vulnerable. And I was going to protect her, no matter what.
I heard the keys unlocking the door. Radford must've had a shorter shift today.
Radford opened the door. "Oh, hey Strebe-what's that?"
"This is Lydia." I showed him the tiny kitten. "She was malnourished on the side of the road, so I took her to the vet, and I ended up adopting her!"
Radford had an unclear expression on his face. "You are so lucky none of us have a cat allergy. Does Kevin know about this?"
"I haven't told him yet." I said, putting Lydia on her little bed. "I just want to watch over Lydia right now." I smiled at the kitten. This was going to be an amazing journey, taking care of her.
