Ajish was sitting on the couch. His goblet was held safely between his fingers. His eyes were drooping down, exhausted and weary. The pain in his chest was throbbing back to life every now and then. A small humorless smirk appeared on his lips.
After all these centuries, after all the uphill battles, after all the hate and love, after an entire lifetime, he got his mate. The mate who was supposed to love him, hold him through thick and thin, put his shattered pieces together, and stand by him all the way. The same mate betrayed him. The same mate was hurt and hurting him.
He wanted to cry and break down. He wanted all this to end. He wanted this to be a nightmare somehow. But he knew it was not. He lifted his eyes to look at the clear night sky. The crescent moon was shining like a lone belle waiting for her love.
"You made me mateless. Why?.. What did I do to you?" for the first time in his lifetime he was talking to the moon goddess. "Tell me what to do" he whispered as he rested his head on the back of the couch.
As he was lost in his own thought he did not realize that the throbbing pain in his chest had almost faded away. At last some peace. His eyes closed with relief. His mind started to drift into darkness. At last some sleep.
But the next moment his eyes flew open. Panic ran down his spine like cold water. He could not hear Adya for a very long time now. His pain was almost gone. Does that mean....?
No
No
NO
"No...no...no...please don't leave" Ajish mumbled to himself as he ran towards the door. He did not realize that even the thought of Adya's death could terrify his mind. He dashed down the stairs, taking a couple of stairs at a time. The dungeon was neat but the dark past still made its presence felt. The dark and gloomy aura could be felt at every turn. He rushed into the last turn and came to a halt.
He was witnessing something very unusual. Rai was sitting on the floor with a bundle in his arms. He was cradling the bundle like a newborn baby. It took Ajish some time to realize that the bundle was Adya wrapped in Ajish's duvet. The duvet had Ajish's scent on it. His scent was soothing Adya's pain, his presence was comforting his mate. This thought gave him a tingle of ease.
At that moment he realized that whatever may come, he cannot let her die. He cannot lose her. But what about Orya? How will he ever explain this to her? How will he sort all this out?
He ran both his hands across his face and leaned against a pillar. He was just staring blankly at Rai and Adya. Rai was wispering to Adya. But to Ajish's surprise, Adya's faint, shaken voice replied to Rai. The conversation was inaudibly soft. Ajish inched a bit forward.
"...mate. I could not understand the overwhelming emotions" Adya mumbled.
"I know. First contact with mates is difficult for vampires. I cannot imagine how intense it can be for a human." Rai replied.
"Why are you here?"
"To keep you alive."
"Why? I killed her."
"No, you did not. I also know that you will not admit to anything right now. But I will not let you die."
"Why?"
"You remind me of my mother," Rai said with a sad smile on his face. "Ready to die for people she loved."
"Will he die if I die?"
There was a moment of silence. Ajish could not make out the expression on Rai's face.
"You will not die. I will not let you die." Rai said sternly.
"Will he?" she asked again. Her voice was so frail, it broke Ajish's heart.
"No"
Adya sighed lightly and whispered "Good".
"You don't want him to die?" asked Rai.
"No"
"I will break his jaws for you" joked Rai. Ajish could hear a small chuckle.
"I will not let you die. You will be fine. I don't know how but you will be fine one day." said Rai who now seemed desperate to assure Adya.
"Why" came a small whisper from Adya.
"You are the only one who can make him live his life and not merely exist in this world." He said.
"I hate him" was the last thing Ajish heard from Adya.
"Shhh...sleep now. We will talk about this later" said Rai as he started to caress her back to make her sleep.
Ajish was still stuck with the fact that Adya hates him. She should. He should hate her as well. He wanted to hate her as well but he could no longer hate her. The thought of Adya not existing in this world was shattering him inside. But the situation was messed up now.
He slowly made his way up the stairs to his study and went inside his bedroom. He went straight to his closet and removed his shirt. Bending down he pulled out a small duffle bag. He started pulling out all the hoodies and shirts he could find and started wearing them. He would wear one, stay that way for some time and then remove the shirt and dump it in the bag.
After a while, he called his butler and handed over the duffle bag to him.
"Give this to Rai. Tell him these are my used shirt. These have my scent on them."
Under normal circumstances, he would have burst out laughing at his butler's expression at that moment but that fact was, today was not at all normal.
Ajish's personal phone rang flashing "Ari" on the screen.
"Ari"
"Ajish, Orya has come out of the coma."
"I will be there"
At the end of the worst day of his existence, he was relieved to hear good news. He ran towards his garage but he saw Rai already rushing the car towards him.
Maybe the sun will shine brighter tomorrow after this dark night.
