Adya sat on the floor of the copter. Rai's limp body lay beside her. Now that she could see him correctly, her blood ran cold at the sight of her guard. His cheekbones were visible through his cheeks. A chunk of his cheeks was missing. A sticky, inky blue liquid was smeared all over his body. It took her a few moments to understand that it was blood, vampire blood. There was a dull ache in her chest. She clutched her chest and sobbed uncontrollably as she lay down beside Rai. Her vision was dizzy. Her eyelids drooped against her will. She, at last, gave up and closed her eyes.
"Daughter...wake up." Adya heard a faint voice. She could feel a soft touch on her face. She was not sure whether she was still alive or not. The thought of death wrenched her heart. She wanted a life with Ajish, a family with him and a happy forever.
"Daughter....?" She heard the voice again, but it was clearer this time. Adya tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt made of lead. She tried moving her fingers. Every fibre of her body was rigid.
"I think she is over-exhausted." Adya heard another voice. She was relieved that she was alive. She wanted to rest some more. She started drifting back to sleep.
"How is the vampire?" The first voice asked. This question alerted Adya. She wanted to know whether Rai made it or not. She forced her eyes open but had to shut them immediately. The room was lit brightly.
"Adya....are you awake? Can you hear me?" The second voice sounded concerned. Adya just nodded her head. Her throat was as dry as a log.
"Ohh...my baby...how are you feeling?" Adya recognised the second voice. It was Mother Haz. She opened her eyes with caution as she felt a glass of water on her lips.
"I...I am f..fine.." Adya managed, followed by dry coughs.
"Easy...easy..." Mother Haz had a shadow of concern on her face. She rubbed Adya's back while she sipped the water. Father Haz was standing still with a stoic expression. Adya could almost see him bursting out with questions, but he held himself back just for the sake of Mother Haz. The Children of Haz was a peculiar community. Here, in the land of Haz, when a child is born, he or she is taken in by the Head of the Land in their home as soon as they turn three. The children live together, grow together, and learn together. Mother and Father Haz are the parent figures for them till they are sixteen. At sixteen, he or she is assigned a profession according to skill set. Once Adya left the Imperial Haz House, she was assigned to be a diplomat. Her biological parents were forest keepers.
"H..How is Rai doing?" Adya asked in a hoarse voice. She waited for the reply patiently until she realised the confusion on their face. "The vampire I bought along."
"Oh..your mate?" Mother Haz answered. "He is doing fine. Although he is still unconscious, he will survive." She had a sad smile on her face. Adya just nodded her head. She did not correct their assumption. Mother Haz sat beside her and held her hands between hers.
"Does he treat you right?" Mother Haz had a tragic expression on her face. " I could never forgive him for abandoning my child like that." A single tear rolled down her cheek as Father Haz sighed. "Did your mate hurt you?" She asked again. The pain and hurt was very evident in her voice.
"Ma...my mate loves me a lot." She tried to assure her, but Mother Haz was not convinced. "He is my husband now." Adya gave an assuring smile to her Mother Haz, who looked half convinced. Adya just smiled.
"Darling, I think you should rest a bit." Father Haz kept a hand on his wife's shoulder. Mother Haz glared at him but walked out slowly after kissing Adya's hands.
"Fa -" Adya wanted to assure Father Haz that she was alright but was cut short by him.
"Adya, I want to make something very clear. If you and your husband have got on the wrong side of the Vampire King, then I can only do this much." He waved his hands. "I will not allow any Child of Haz to get involved." He closed his eyes. Adya could sense his dilemma and pain. "I cannot sacrifice all my children to protect one." He opened his eyes. "But if it comes to it, I will hide you from the world." He whispered. "I can't sacrifice my children, but I will happily die for my child." Adya smiled through her tears. She just shook her head. Her voice choked in her throat as tears rolled down her cheeks.
A short knock on the door ended their moment. The door opened slowly. An olive-skinned boy stood on the other end of the threshold. His eyes were fixed on Adya. He bowed a little.
"The vampire is awake." He said in a stoic voice. Father Haz nodded. The boy left, shutting the door close behind him. Adya wanted to get up and sprint to her guard, but she could not. Getting up from the bed was a struggle. Before Father Haz could stop her, she fell face-first on the floor. Her body was sore. Every muscle of her body cried out in pain.
"Adya...what are you doing?" Father Haz rushed to her side. "You will hurt yourself." He caught hold of her arms and tried to pull her up.
"I..I need to see him." Adya raised her head to look into Father Haz's eyes. "Please..." She pleaded. Father Haz just nodded and helped her to stand upright.
"You are weak." He tried to reason with her. She shook her head and looked at him with pleading eyes. "Ok...wait. I will get a wheelchair." He sighed.
Father Haz rolled her wheelchair across the corridor. The other Children of Haz were peaking out of their rooms, trying to catch a glimpse of the human mate of a Vampire. She could hear whispers all around. She just smiled.
Rai was sitting upright. The large chunk of the cheek, which was missing, was now replaced by new muscles and skin, though paler than the rest of the face. Adya knew that Vampires healed super fast, but this was impressive.
"Are you hurt?" Rai boomed. He was struggling to step out of the bed. "You are an idiot." He could not contain his rage. Adya was taken aback. She thought the last he could do was thank her for saving his life, but she was being called an idiot. "You could have died there." His voice reflected sheer pain.
"You would have definitely died there," Adya replied flatly. Father Haz was confused at this reaction. Aren't mates supposed to be madly in love? They were behaving more like siblings. He shook his head in disapproval.
"I think you both should rest. You both were out for three days." He interjected.
"THREE DAYS?" Adya and Rai could not believe the fact. Both looked at each other. "Ajish?" Adya whispered, but as she was about to put her worries into words, the room door opened with a loud thud. The olive-skinned boy hunched forward. His eyes were wide, and his skin was pale. Panic was written all over his face.
"Father, th...the Vampire King is here." He blurted out. He was shaking like a dry leaf. "H...he is coming this way." He was almost on the verge of a blackout. Father Haz was about to hurry out when another panic-stricken voice floated through the corridor.
"Please, My King...with...with all due res...respect. This is ...a hospital." Whoever was speaking was indeed out of breath. "You can not..."
A disheveled Ajish burst into the room. His clothes were torn in places. His face had faint scars of wounds and bright blue stains. His eyes were swirling with rage. He resembled an angry lion on a blood bath mission. As soon as he entered, his eyes landed on Adya. Adya, on the other hand, could not react. Father Haz swiftly stood in between Adya and Ajish.
"My King, you will not harm my daughter... or her mate." His voice was firm, but his shaking legs gave away his fear. Ajish's eyes darted from Rai to Adya and back to Rai. She could see madness brew in his eyes. He would kill anyone right now. She had to act fast.
"Ajji..." She called him out. She got up from the wheelchair and sprinted towards Ajish. Her bones and muscles were on fire. She threw her arms around his neck and found her peace. Ajish grabbed Adya and pulled her close to him. Adya pushed her face into his neck. They stood that way for a long moment. Father Haz and everyone around were speechless.
After a long moment, Ajish lifted Adya in his arms and kissed her temple. He turned to Rai and gave a short nod. Rai bowed his head a little. Ajish silently turned around to leave the room with his mate. He halted after a few steps and turned around. He looked directly into Father Haz's eyes.
"She is my mate. She is mine."
