Chapter 10: I Don't Believe in Merman

*Febuary 16th*

Ricky's POV:

I spent all weekend avoiding EJs voicemails and texts while laying in bed away from Miss Jenn's cat, Trina.

My legs felt sore over the weekend from swimming to Mako Island and back two Utah but Miss Jenn said that it's normal after a long swim overseas.

While she was preparing me some crab cakes to eat for breakfast on Sunday, she also told me about the time she swam from Utah to Europe to see the sights on vacation before she came to East High.

She has some weird stories and I am not sure if they are true or not.

I'm just glad that she didn't ask me what I was doing in Mako.

I just told her that I had to see my merman Mentor and it was urgent.

That was the end of our conversation.

Now, it's Monday and I spent all day either in class looking for Jet and with Gina and Nini who were flirting with each other.

It kind of made me miss EJ but i pushed that thought in the back of my mind since it's my fault he didn't have a Valentine's day dance date.

I went to Mako when the dance happened.

I ditched him.

I'm in the costume room admiring Kourtney who is helping with costumes with some other student named, Tanya while some of the other scenes are being rehearsed.

She is taking precautions too even though she has a moon ring, I wish I could protect myself from getting wet and transforming.

I need to talk to Jet and Maddox but they weren't in school today.

And at lunch I sat next to Gina and Nini because E.J wouldn't let me sit at his table.

"New boy, be useful and hand me that measuring tape on the desk." I look over at Kourtney's co-designer Tanya and glare at her since she didn't even bother to ask me what my name was when I walked in the room.

"My name is Ricky by the way." I hand Tanya the measuring tape and admire Kourtney who is sewing a dress to be seamed up.

She told me a bit about sewing at lunch but not much.

She also apologized to me about the aquarium ditch incident but I said it was okay since I got my time with EJ.

"Ricky, why weren't you at the Valentine's day dance the other day? E.J was so sad and he didn't dance. He was texting you and leaving you voicemails all night. Val, even tried to get him punch but he didn't accept it. I've never seen someone so sad at a Valentine's day dance before, even the nerds of the school weren't that sad sitting on the bleachers." I look up from my seat and look up at Kourtney sewing and giving me a concerned look.

I have to lie to keep my secret.

Big Red already knows too much about my tail and I will kill him if he exposes my secret to anyone he knows.

"I had to visit my grandma who is sick. Miss Jenn helped me get in touch with her." I make up a believable lie even though I don't know much about my grandmas except that I have two of them.

"I thought that you said Miss Jenn was your only close family friend nearby Utah?" I watch Kourtney put her sewing tools down and stare at me to see if I have a reaction.
