Anne was still wiping away tears when she got into her parents' car. Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy looked into their rearview mirror with eyes of sympathy. Seeing the pain on their daughter's face may them want to ask what was wrong, but knew it wasn't the time.
Once they walked into the house Mrs. Boonchy sat on the couch placing a pillow on her lap. Anne curled into her mother's lap while Mrs. Boonchuy covered her with a blanket. Mr. Boonchuy handed his daughter a pint of pistachio ice cream.
"Bee, I don't think Ice cream in the morning is a great idea." Mrs. Boonchuy lightly scolded her husband.
"Mom, I'm sad." Anne said with a lip quiver.
"Fine." She shook her head.
"I'm going to retrieve Anne's car before it gets towed." Mr. Boonchuy ordered a ride share and waited outside for it.
The next day Mrs. Boonchuy had one of Anne's work uniforms washed and pressed along with some frog blankets. Mr. Boonchuy stopped at the market to pick up some more pistachio ice cream. They did everything to make her comfortable and not feel pressured to open up until she was ready.
Anne went to work with less pep in her step. She ate lunch and went to Boba in silence. She kept her headphones in her ear until an order for the Thai Go order was ready to be delivered. She would finish her shift, go to her parents house to hide under a blanket, eat ice cream, and watch reruns of Suspicious Island . Her mom would bring food to her bedroom door that Anne would eat sometimes.
After two weeks of this her parents started to get worried. They both agreed that it was time to intervene. They had to figure out who was going to do it. They went into their room to whisper their plan, so Anne wouldn't hear them.
"Okay, you're her favorite, so you should do it." Mrs. Boonchuy said.
"Wait, she said, I was her favorite?" Mr. Boonchuy beamed.
"Oh, calm down, Bee." She shook her head, "It's only because you're the fun parent."
"Exactly, and right now she needs a strict parent. She needs you, Oum." He smiled.
"Flattery will get you nowhere." Mrs. Boonchuy said, with a stone face.
"Okay, there is only one way to decide." He lowered his eyes.
"If we must," She lowered her eyes too.
He put his fist out and she did the same
"One..." He said.
"Two..." She added,
"Three..." He said.
They shook their fist up and down.
"Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot!" They said together.
"Yes!" Mr. Boonchuy cheered seeing that his wife's rock lost to his paper.
"Calm down." She crossed her arms over her chest, "one more time."
"No, I won fair and square."
Mr. Boonchuy hurried to the kitchen to get his ice cream. Mrs. Boonchuy was right behind him trying to catch their daughter in the kitchen before she retreated back into her room.
Mr. Boonchuy went to the freezer while Mrs. Boonchuy looked lovingly at their sad child who was moping around the living room with a blanket and ice cream.
"So, another pint of Ice cream?" Mrs. Boonchuy smiled sweetly.
"Yeah, it's so good,'' she said with a pout.
"I would love to have some..." Mr. Boonchuy said, a little frustrated, walking into the living room,"... but, everytime I buy pistachio flavor you eat it." He sighed.
