Marcy spun around with an awkward smile. "Hey Mrs. Boonchuy," She stood perfectly still feeling every muscle in her body tense up. "So, is Anne with you?'"No dear."
"Oh," Marcy's body relaxed and so did her face into a frown.
"She's finishing her shift at the Aquarium. She should be here in ten minutes." She smiled warmly.
"Oh, okay." Marcy smiled. "Well, I'll stop bothering you and let you set up."
Mrs. Boonchuy walked over to Marcy, extending her arms offering a hug which Marcy accepted. "You could never bother me, dear."
Marcy felt a tear in her eye at how tender the hug and words felt as she hugged her back with a gentle squeeze, "thank you."
"You're very welcome, dear." Mrs. Boonchuy released Marcy. "Okay, I'm going to set up the food station."
"Let me help you," Marcy ran behind the woman tripping in the process, but standing up just as quickly, "I'm okay." She gave a thumbs up.
Marcy grabbed a plate of food after helping Mrs. Boonchy set up. If she tried to be served by Anne Marcy knew that she would have spilled her plate and everyone else's. Eating early didn't help since she was a mixture of worried and excited to see Anne, she didn't eat much.
Marcy knew it could have been Mr. Boonchuy who showed up instead of Anne. Fridays were Anne's short days at the aquarium, but sometimes she stayed longer to get ahead start for the following week. But even with the odds against her Marcy still had to take the chance, and thank frog she did.
Anne walked in exactly ten minutes later with her red bandana and green apron. Mrs. Boonchuy waved her daughter over and she nodded before walking forward.
Marcy watched Anne dreamily, from behind a book, serve the office staff. She would stay close with enough distance to get glimpses of Anne's face. Anne would catch them every now again and blush. Marcy slid the book over her eyes trying to hide her cherry red cheeks. They were so focused on pretending they were reading that they didn't even hear Anne walk up.
"Whatcha doing?" Anne said sweetly.
Marcy jumped up, dropping the book and themselves to the floor "Anne! You scared me."
Anne reached out their hand to help them up. "I thought I would come over and say hi since you keep staring." She said playfully.
Marcy stood up and looked at Anne's hand that was still holding hers. She scratched her neck with the other hand and smiled. "Yeah, sorry about that."
Anne looked at their interlocked fingers and squeezed a little tighter, "it's okay.." She smiled warmly, not daring to let go.
"You sure?" Marcy moved closer.
"Yeah," Anne bit her lip.
"Okay." Marcy began to swing their arms Anne smiled and joined in as their hearts swung against their chest.
"Okay." Anne stopped swinging their arms and looked a little disappointed. "Well, I really should help my mom pack up."
"No," Marcy said almost in a panic. "I mean, there's a few people around here who could help with that." She gave Anne's hand a gentle pleading squeeze.
"You sure?" Anne rubbed her thumb along Marcy's knuckles. "I don't want to burden anyone with my task."
"No bother." Marcy placed her tongue against her top lip scanning the room seeing who would do them a favor. It seemed hopeless until she smiled at Jessie who just threw their plate away. Marcy waved her over to which she came with a smile.
