Trigger warning: Abortion
Matt stared at me and his eyes were full of confusion and fury. His lips parted and closed as if he was going to say something but changed his mind.
The sun left us and the night sky appeared. The night breeze was touching my face as we looked at each other in silence.
"I'm sorry," I said and looked down while my tears fell. "I...It was my f... fault that our baby didn't hold on. All of this was o... on me. I... I lost our baby."
I heard Matt's footsteps and when I looked up, his back was turned to me as he walked to the driver's side of his car.
I walked briskly to follow him after I wiped my tears away. I held on to his and pulled him. "Matt, please, I... I'm s... sorry."
He peeled my hand off of his arm with his shaky hands. "Leave me alone, Catria," he said with his cold tone.
"Please, I didn't mean for it to happen," I said while shaking my head. "It was an accident."
"You think this is about that?" he raised his voice while shaking his head. He scoffed sarcastically. "You think I would blame you for that?"
I parted my lips and was about to say something but he spoke again.
"I can let that slide, Catria." His jaw clenched and his eyes turned daggers. "But keeping it from me after all these years is something that I cannot just let go of."
"I'm sorry..."
"It makes me question if you were really pregnant..." his voice lowered and looked away. "Because why else would you tell me this now, right? After seven years... After seeing that I'm okay now. You think I'll run to you like the dog that I was after knowing about this?
"After losing your money and your power, you don't have people who will follow your every order so you're coming back to me telling me all of this." He scoffed and shook his head. "When will you stop, Catria?"
My jaw dropped. Is he implying that I'm lying about our child? "I would never use our baby like that, Matt. I love our baby—"
He scoffed again. "Do you really? Are you really capable of loving someone other than yourself?"
I was taken aback by his words. "I... love you."
He shook his head. "You are a better liar than this, Catria," he said mockingly and turned his back on me.
He entered his car and sped off, leaving me behind. My knees wobbled but I was still able to walk back to my car.
I looked up at the night sky to stop my tears from falling. Did I damage him too much for him to be that way?
