"Ok! Ok!" I shout out tossing my squirt gun to the side and fake waving a flag of truce in the air. "I
surrender. You guys win!"
I pull myself out of the pool slowly and walk to my towel and collapse on a pool chair trying to
catch my breath. I had just got my butt handed to me by my cousin and uncle. Beth went inside
after Jake accidentally smacked her on the forehead with his squirt gun. She had laughed it off but
had still gotten out anyway. It had gotten slightly less violent after that but not much. I had
managed to get a squirt gun away from my uncle, but it hadn't really made much difference since
he just resorted to splashing. Which actually ended up working out for him better than when he
had the squirt gun. So I had basically caused my own doom.
"Good effort." My uncle says laughing as he gets out of the pool to go dry off, Jake following close
behind him.
"I only quit because if I'd kept playing I would have beaten you painfully. I just really didn't want
you to suffer through the thought of being beat by a seventeen year old girl." I say trying to keep a
serious face but I end up grinning anyway. My uncle just laughs as he heads toward the house.
"I guess we will just have to have a rematch," he says. Jake waves goodbye as he follows my uncle
into the house. I wave back and then lean back to relax.
"Rose!"
A voice startles me out of my thoughts and I squint my eyes toward the house trying to make out
who it is. It's my aunt.
"We're having company over tonight so Jake, Sam, and I are heading into town!"
I wave my arm at her to let her know I heard her, then roll onto my stomach and fall asleep
almost instantly.
A few hours later I wake up to the smell of my burning skin. Not literally of course, but my skin
feels like I've been thrown into a fire. I cautiously roll over but the feeling of the ground on my
fiery skin makes me swear. I slowly stand up and hobble toward the house, groaning in pain each
time I take a step forward. After years of walking I finally make it to the bathroom where I turn on
the radio. Then i turn on the shower on as cold as I can bear it and step in. The cold water makes
me clench my teeth together. As the cool water touches my burn though I sigh in contentment. I
hurriedly and gingerly wash then step out of the shower and wrap myself in a towel. The song
Titanium is playing on my radio and I sing along.
"Bulletproof, nothin to lose. Fire away, fire away." I continue singing as I wander toward my
bedroom.
"Ahem." Someone behind me clears there throat. I scream and whirl around to face the person.
It's a guy around my age. Even at first glance I can tell he's hot but I'm to embarrassed to care at
the moment.
"Who the heck are you?!" I exclaim. "And how did you get in?"
"Beth and Sam let us in. We're here for dinner..." He trails off as he really sees for the first time
what I'm wearing and he starts to blush. Crap. I had totally forgot the only thing I was wearing
was a skimpy towel.
"Oh gosh." I blush furiously and try to pull the towel down more but it can only cover so much.
"I'm just gonna.. Umm... I'm gonna..." I give up trying to speak and decide to turn and bolt into
my room. I slam the door behind and collapse onto the bed. I grab a pillow and scream into it.
Welcome to one of the top ten most embarrassing moments of my life. How am I supposed to face
him after that? I don't even know the guys name yet but he's already seen me half naked. I scream
into the pillow again but I'm cut off in mid scream by Aunt Beth calling me upstairs. I groan and
slowly ease off the bed and rip open my close to look for something to wear. I decide on a simple
purple sundress. I gently pull it on taking care to not rub my sunburn to hard. Then I slip on a
silver necklace with the letter R on it. I open my door and peek back into the hallway making sure
that the hot guy isn't their anymore. Great, now I've started calling him The Hot Guy. I better not
call him that to his face, I think I've had enough mortification for one day. I walk back into the
bathroom and switch off the still-playing radio. I brush my hair and then scrunch it. I don't
bother with makeup since I suck at it and its just an annoyance.
I take a deep breath and slowly start making my way up the stairs, my brain working a hundred
miles a minute. What if he told everyone? Are they laughing at me? What if he secretly took a
picture? Oh gosh, he better not have taken a picture or ill go all Kung fu-y on his a**.
"Ummm, Rose?"
I snap out of my daze and realize that I've made it all the way upstairs without even realizing it.
How long have I been standing here? It must have been for a while judging by the weird looks
everyone's giving me.
"I'm fine! Sorry, just thinking."
I turn to look at The Hot Guy and his family.
"I'm Rose." I say extending my hand. Hot Guy's mom smiles and shakes my hand.
"I'm Susan this is Rick," She gestures to her husband. Then she gestures to The Hot Guy. "and
this is Dylan."
