They get moved to a new room while James is gone and it takes a little while to find. The suite is nice, a private bathroom and a bed with a pullout couch pushed against the wall.
The windows are huge as always and Severus just stares out of it while listening to his music.
" What are you listening to?" James asks, putting down his book and craning his neck to see Severus.
" Wanna hear?" Severus offers an airpod and James nods.
He catches it easily when it's thrown at him and puts it in.
Middle of the night by Elley Duhé. He recognizes it immediately.
" Our wedding song?" James asks and Severus hums.
" There's a reason why i chose it y'know."
James smiles and returns to his book, unable to stop the fluttering in his heart.
The song brings back memories and Severus restarts it so they can listen to the whole thing together. The pullout couch is a little uncomfortable to sleep on but James doesn't mind, Severus can't be that much more comfortable with all those wires around him.
It doesn't take long until Severus is drifting off and James puts down his book, laying on his side so he can see Severus.
There's a million things he wants to say, mainly apologies.
There's also the subject at hand, what will he do in three weeks. Sirius isn't one to make ultimatums on a whim so it's not a joking matter.
A part of the song comes on and James remembers the walk down the aisle, Severus' long hair pin straight and tucked behind his ear. Their song was in orchestra but the melody is still the same.
He rubs his eye and sighs, facing the ceiling now.
He doesn't want to leave Severus, it would cause all hell to break loose but Regulus....for some reason he can't let go. There's no love there yet but there's something tying him there.
He doesn't know what it is and it bothers him. A lot.

" How is he?"
James looks to the side and watches Severus' chest rise and fall for a bit. His back is turned to him but his steady breaths soothes James' worry.
" He's fine now. They want to keep him for a week."
" I thought it was only a couple of days."
" There's an abnormality in his heartbeat, they're still monitoring him." James lies and Regulus sighs.
" I hope he's okay."
" He is. Until he gets out it's wise if I stay with him."
" Yeah, that's a good idea."
There's some sadness in Regulus' voice and James looks down at his lap.
" How are you?" He asks, trying to change the subject.
" Missing you."
James smiles but it falls almost as quickly.
" I miss you too."
The night is cold, dropping just below zero. Severus shivers in his bed and can't fall asleep, stays awake until dawn.
He's awake just enough to catch James' conversation.
His chest hurts again and he kneads it with his palm. He needs the pills but if he gets up now it'll break his cover.
So he just lays there, waiting out two kinds of pain just so he doesn't disturb James. The conversation continued more or less the same and the more he listened to it the worser he felt.
