James silences his phone for what feels like the hundredth time that day. The calls ring then fade, then ring again a few minutes later. He goes through cycles of these where Regulus calls three times in a row then not at all for hours. Then he repeats the cycle and James is sitting with 12 missed calls glaring at him through his phone.
He sighs and sets it down, waiting for Severus outside the hospital.
It has become kind of a habit now. He gets off work and picks up Severus, they pick up dinner or eat somewhere new then go home.
Sirius calls them dates but they do it every day so it's not...right?
James doesn't think he's ever went on this many "dates" with one person.
" Hey." Severus greets while James disassociates in his seat, finally realizing he's been sitting there for far too long.
" Hi. How was work?" James asks as Severus sits inside and leans in to give him a kiss.
" Good. Are you ok? You seem spacey." Severus asks and James nods.
" I'm fine. Don't worry."
" You know I will."
" I know." James chuckles and restarts the car.

James feels a little on edge. Maybe it's just in his head, maybe he's overthinking. But things have been so good lately, too good.
Severus and him have never gone this long without a fight, a screaming match or just plain ignorance of each other's existence.
It feels like the calm before a storm, like Severus is slowly figuring things out and will leave him like he's always threatening to do.
Ok not always but the three times he's done it has scared James to the bones. He isn't entirely sure if this honeymoon phase will last and Severus will leave him or not.
Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Maybe....maybe he should.
But this is crazy. They've been so good, they've been so stable. So why would everything go down now?
James is paranoid for no reason. He knows it. He just...wants reassurance.
" Did you pick up the dry cleaning?" Severus asks as he looks through his closet, realizing his favorite suit is gone.
" Um. No i'll do it tomorrow."
" I need it tonight though. I told you it's important." Severus says and sighs, running his hand through his hair.
" Sorry, i just...i forgot. I'm sorry." James says in a small voice and Severus turns around.
James is half expecting him to be angry but he just looks worried. He must've been making some kind of face because Severus is reaching for his hand and coming closer.
" No no It's ok. I didn't mean to make you feel bad, i was just stressed." Severus said as he cradled his face in his hands, checking James but seeing nothing in his eyes.
That scared him a little, that James' eyes looked so void.
" It's....fine." James musters a smile and Severus copies the faked reassurance.
Severus kisses him softly, brings him in for a hug and lets him dig his face into the crook of his neck to hide. He lets him stay there for a while even when he has an office party to get to.
He reassures him quietly, but James still feels conflicted. He feels worried and scared, paranoid, anxious, hesitant, all those things.
Because he's never been stable with Severus, and now that he is.....how long until it gets ripped away from him?
