December 13th | Prompt: Lost in a snowstorm
Susan closed her eyes as she breathed in the refreshing, cold winter air, then quickly rubbed her arms as a gush of wind blew behind her. "It's getting pretty windy." she commented, glancing around through the snow that was coming down.
"Yeah, it's fine though." Edmund answered. "Race ya!" he suddenly exclaimed as he urged his horse to gallop away.
Susan's mouth dropped open in surprise and she instantly clicked her tongue, tapping the sides of the horse with her heels, signaling it to go. "To where?!" she yelled to her brother who was ahead of her.
"I don't know!" Edmund replied back, laughing.
Susan frowned, rolling her eyes playfully. They continued galloping for a while, each trying to ride faster than the other, until Edmund pointed to a big tree.
"Over there!"
"Hyah!" Susan shouted, but then slowed her horse down when Edmund reached the spot first.
"I win." her brother grinned.
"You got a head start." she said. Pulling her snowflake-dusted hair behind her, she realized it was getting harder to see a few feet away from her. "Ed, the snow's getting heavier, do you think we should head back?"
Edmund looked up at the sky, squinting. "Yeah, let's go. It's getting colder too."
While trying to find their way back to Cair, the weather grew worse. The wind was blowing fiercely, causing the snow that was coming down harder and harder to swirl all around them.
"Edmund, I can't see well anymore, and I don't know where we are!" Susan told him.
"Me neither!" he answered. "We should stop now before we get even more lost!" he dismounted his horse, and waited until Susan had too. They began walking close together, searching for shelter, leading their horses behind them.
"Look!" Edmund pointed to a small cave a few yards away from them and they quickly made their way to it. "Go inside, I'll tie up the horses." he instructed, taking the reins and motioning towards a tree.
Ducking, Susan went inside of the cave, instantly feeling a little warmer as she sat down up against the wall. A minute later, Edmund came and sat beside her, rubbing his stiff hands, then pulling his sister close in an attempt at keeping them both warm.
"We'll have to wait until it calms down out there." he sighed, shivering.
"Won't Peter and Lucy start to get worried?" asked Susan.
"We don't really have a choice, Su. We can't find our way home with it snowing like that."
Susan took a deep breath, worried. They were lost in a snowstorm and she had no idea when it would stop.
Noticing her shivering, Edmund took off his coat and held it out towards her. "Here."
"No, I'm fine. You'll freeze." she responded. When Edmund looked hesitant. She said, "Seriously, I'm okay." Edmund still hesitated for a while, but eventually put the coat back on.
I really hope they find us soon, Susan thought, knowing her siblings would come search for them.
They sat there for a long while before they heard something. A faint noise from outside, like voices. Both of their heads snapped up, looking outside, relieved when they saw it had finally stopped snowing.
"Edmund!! Susan!!" they heard Peter call. Susan and Edmund got up immediately and went outside. Susan gasped when Peter and Lucy emerged from a couple of trees and rushed to hug her older brother.
"Oh, thank Aslan." Peter sighed, sounding completely relieved as he wrapped his arms around his sister.
"We were worried when you didn't come home, and then we saw the snowstorm and figured you got lost." Lucy told them.
The four went home, explaining what had happened on the way. And though they had all been worried for a while, they were happy they had all found each other.
