SIMON POV <3

I walked down the desolate hallway, my breath low and quiet. No one challenged me as I made my way to the doors, intent on not turning around. All I could see in my mind was Aspen's face, the tears falling as I left without saying goodbye. He deserved better than me, maybe he'd be better off if I didn't come back. The doors swung open as I shoved my way through them, not caring if they slammed in the process.

Once the cold air hit my face, I knew there was no turning around. Spotting a smaller type of truck, I walked quickly over to it. No one was in sight as I threw my bag into the backseat. The keys were stowed above in a little compartment, but I had no trouble finding them. It wasn't my first time leaving the base alone, but it wasn't the same this time.

Turning on the truck, I took one last look at the base as I stepped on the gas. I knew the way to the cemetery by heart, a sad truth that I couldn't forget. The lights of the base grew distant as I sped north up the road. It wouldn't be too long of a drive, and the roads were usually quite empty. The sun was still in the sky, but not for long.

The sun was like an artist, it painted colors across the sky every day and every night. Whenever I see pink and orange skies I think of him. We called him "Skyhawk" because he was one hell of a pilot. If not the best 141 had ever seen. His skills unmatched when it came to anything aviation related. I never learned his name, until the very end. The dogtags had his real name, but I never used it.

Sky for short, was a young bright soldier who was trained for years. Once he changed paths and became a pilot, he was recruited to join 141. I welcomed him to the base and was the first to see if he was fit to join. I hadn't seen such a soldier since him, though I could be biased. Now, all I had of him was the memories, the dogtag, and one picture. It was 141 all together, celebrating a victory we would never forget.

The sun began its final descent and I realized I might have to stop somewhere for the night. A town nearby would be perfect, I remember last I visited there were a few motels. However that was three years ago so things could be different. Lights in the distance grew closer as I made my way to the town limits. The motel I remembered was still in the same place, with a dimly lit sign and a few lights. Thankfully the sign read Vacant. Parking the truck, I realized I still had my gear and mask on. I guess it couldn't be too weird right?

I hopped out of the truck and grabbed my bag. Walking towards the front desk I locked the truck and put the keys in my pocket. The lobby was empty and I made my way to the desk where a man was sitting. He looked up and immediately jumped when he saw my face. Standing tall he tried to make himself seem tough, but his body was shaking.

"Can I help you sir?" He asked, literally trembling.

"Just need a room for one night." I replied, my accent surprising him.

"Of course, have a nice stay. We offer breakfast from 6 to 8 every morning." He replied, grabbing a room key for me.

"Appreciate it, hope this covers all the costs. Keep any change." I said, throwing a 50 on the desk. In turn I picked up the key and walked away.

The room was dusty, old, and cold. Just like home. Setting my bag down, I pulled off my gear and mask. I packed my favorite hoodie and a pair of sweats just incase. Pulling them on, I brushed my teeth and shaved my face. I was awfully scruffy and definitely needed a new look. With everything set to leave tomorrow morning, I laid down in the stiff old bed and closed my eyes.

The bed was empty and I missed Aspen's embrace. His warm hugs and fluffy hair, his sweet smile that always made me feel like I was worth something. I wonder if he's thinking about me too. My consciousness slipped away as I fell into a deep sleep.
