Later that evening I was finally able to be moved into my room. Clint helped me walk there. The compound is beautiful. The back side overlooks the ocean with a huge courtyard for training outdoors. I might like it here. Who knows?
"You settling in alright?" A voice asked from my door. I turned my head to see Nat standing there.
"Yeah I guess. It's all just new. I got so used to living on my own in a tiny studio apartment. Now over the course of a day and a half, I'm living with a bunch of people who only just met me besides Clint." I said, attempting to sit up and getting pissed off when I couldn't.
"Here, let me help you." She said and came closer. She grabbed a spare pillow from the closet and propped it behind me. Putting her arms under mine to pull me up carefully.
"The meds helping at least?" She asked, sitting at the foot of the bed.
"Yeah. Just hurts to move. Im sure I'm covered in bruises. Whoever it was that attacked me, they had incredible strength and... and I just couldn't fight him off. I tried.." I said, my voice cracking and a tear rolling down my cheek. Finally breaking after trying so hard to keep my cool in front of them earlier.
"Oh honey, you're gonna be okay. We'll keep you safe. I promise. Clint told us all a bit about you and how he thinks of you as his sister. We protect our family." She said sweetly, holding my hand gently in hers. Her skin soft as butter.
"Thanks. And... I know we don't know each other but given your room is across from mine.. you should know, and you might wanna tell Clint and whoever else is on this floor.. I get really bad nightmares. I wake up screaming a lot. Out of breath. In full panic mode. My childhood wasn't great.. so the memories come screaming back almost every time I close my eyes." I said, preparing her for what's to come.
"Yeah well, Bucky might have you beat there. Im sure you've heard his story. It was all over the news for awhile. His nightmares are nightly. He doesn't always wake up screaming but when he does, it's best not to go in there. He gets defensive, thinking he's being captured again." She said, smiling weakly.
"Why... why me? Why would he save me?" I asked. The question having been rolling around in my head since I woke up.
"Since he's gotten his own head back, he's truly become quite the sweetheart. He cares. More than anyone here if you ask me. He's very attentive to his surroundings. Plus... you're really beautiful. What guy would ever be able to abandon a damsel in distress?" She whispered the last part.
"Yeah well... there are things about me that not everyone knows. And I don't plan on talking about them. It's not something I talk about even to myself." I said, looking down at my hands.
"Well hey, I think you're gorgeous regardless of what history you have. You seem sweet and caring. Loyal. And Clint showed me a clip of you two singing together, so add talented to that list too." She said and rubbed my arm gently.
"I'll let you get some rest. If you need anything, just ask. Jarvis can hear you and will let us know when you need anything. Right, Jarvis?" She asked, looking up at the ceiling.
"Of course, Ms. Romanoff." A voice spoke out from a speaker system I noticed along the entire top outline of the room.
"Get some rest. One of us will come check on you in a bit." She said and left my room, closing the door behind her.I stayed up though. Not ready to go back into the dark land of dreams.
I looked around the room. Trying to see where Clint may have put my notebook for my lyrics. Fuck. I can't see it.
I grabbed my phone from the side table, wincing in pain. I pulled up his messages and typed to him.
Me- hey arrow boy, where's my notebook?
I sent the text and a matter of seconds passed before he came walking into my room.
"Hey sweetie. I totally didn't even think to put it out for you." He said and walked over to the desk against the back wall and pulled it out from a drawer. He brought it over to me along with a pen and pulled out a foldable lap desk type of thing.
"Oh you know me so well. Thank you." I said and squeezed his hand briefly.
"What's going through that pretty head? Got any good ones?" He asked, referring to my lyric writing.
"I've just got this bit stuck in my head since I woke up this morning so I wanted to write it down before I forgot." I said and opened the notebook, starting to write it all down.
"Song it for me?" He asked. He told me quite some time ago that he really enjoys my singing. Since the first time he heard me he's been glued to my voice.
"It's just a little blip. It's not a whole song, Clint." I said and smiled at him.
"Hey. You sing it to me right now or I'll have Bruce dose you up with a sedative." He threatened playfully.
"Alright alright." I said and cleared my throat."Down the river, we're drunk and all of our thumbs went up in the air
Sunken in the wind, listening to the thunder rolling over and over, we
Down the river, we're drunk and all of our thumbs went up in the air
Sunken in the wind, listening to the thunder rolling over and over
We down
We're getting on fire
We're raising up higher
The bottle is up
We're over the top
It's time to get vile
The time our life
Is happenin' now
We're out of control
Together we're rolling, over and over.." I sang the lyrics. Getting lost in it as I usually do."Dani.. that sounds incredible. Tony is gonna be throwing a welcome party for you once you're better. You and I should do a performance. We can since the one song you like and this one. You have plenty of time to get it finished. Especially at the rate you write them. You could have a whole album done in under a week." He said, placing his hand gently to the side of my head.
"I'm down. But we do your song first." I said. Not having a problem with singing in front of people. I used to have stage fright but after singing with him for some time now, I've gotten over it.
"Oh I can't wait for them to hear you in sprain. Videos and clips do you no justice. You'll have all the guys smitten in seconds." He said jokingly. I shook my head and laughed at him. Wincing at the pain in my ribs.
"Don't make me laugh, Barton! It hurts." I said and playfully slapped his arm.
"Alright. You finish that song and get some rest. Just text me if you need me and I'll come check on you." He said and kissed my forehead before walking out. Closing the door behind him.
