I watched as he pulled himself away from me and for whatever reason, I instantly felt empty. As if Alice sensed the shift in my mood she appeared with a small smile on her face.
"I'd like to show you the rest of the camp if you're interested," she spoke softly and calmly as if I was easily spooked, of course, I have run off a few times.
"Absolutely," I returned her smile and stood throwing my cigarette in the fire before following her past the flames and closer to the heart of the land.
"This is where we train," she said as we approached a large fence in Wall and I could hear loud grunts behind it.
"Train for what?" I asked in complete stupidity.
"To protect our home," she said, giving me a nudge of her arm. I followed her around the whole village, where she showed me the local meat market and post office. "Then this is where everyone stays," she finished pointing at each little home surrounding the whole land.
Somehow we ended back up at the training site and Mason was there, I assumed he was teaching the younger ones a thing or two about fighting. When he sees us approach he gave a warm smile and told the kids to take five before joining us.
"Can I ask you guys a question? Azure knows so much about me and I know so little about him. Can you guys maybe give me a little insight?" I requested them eagerly.
Alice simply looked at Mason for what I assume was permission as he was still a higher rank than her.
"I don't know what we'll be able to tell you is enough, but we'll tell you. First things first, Azure has family other than those you see here but I assume something bad happened in that regard cause he doesn't talk about me anymore and gets angry anytime I've brought it up, back when it was just him and I, he'd talk about his brothers and sisters and what that pack had been like as a kid. Second, our Alpha is headstrong, compassionate, and loyal but he takes betrayal seriously and if he's raging mad, get out of the immediate vicinity because he is ruthless and barbaric when he goes all out. Third..." Mason speaks and Alice then cuts him off taking up the conversation.
"Third, Azure has two different versions of himself: the one we see every day who is more man than beast and the one he allows only himself to see, the beast who ate the man. And lastly, the final thing you should know about him is he was an alpha, somehow even before he found all of us. Before you ask for more information, we don't know, that's his story to tell." Alice told Violet as she put a hand on her shoulder.
I listened to their words with ferocious intensity, my mind blanks then suddenly running a million miles a minute. So he has as many secrets as I do it seems, and anger issues to top the cake with. Which didn't bode well for me seeing as I was well-known for pissing people off.
Fear and curiosity flowed at equal strength through my veins and straight to my heart. Everything about this man both terrified me and intrigued me, nothing about this was normal.
"He told me where I could find him, I think it's time maybe we have a chat that doesn't end with me running away," I whispered, laughing ever so slightly. A few hours had passed since I last saw him and every part of my body ached to be around him again, so after bidding farewells, I made my way to the river.
It wasn't long before I reached the waters shore and I found myself parched on a rock letting the cooling breeze blow my long ponytail all around me. "Tell me more.." I murmured, mostly to myself but not realizing I spoke aloud as well.
"Tell you more about what exactly?" He exclaimed, reveling in the surprise on my face as I came out of my head space.
"Alice let me know she and Mason gave you a little more information on me per your request so I imagine you'd like to know what they don't, now, yes?" He asked, his voice taking on a guarded tone.
"For now I'll answer one of your questions so think hard about which one. If you stay longer and start to integrate into the pack ill answer more at that time. Fair?"
I gnawed on my lip as he spoke while my mind raced at all of the questions I could ask him, trying to narrow it down to one. I wanted to give him a chance, I wanted to give us a chance, as scary as that was for me.
"Tell me about your family.." I requested simply, although from my own experience I knew it wasn't a simple question at all. I wanted to know where our similarities lie and what the differences are, I wanted to know more about him.
He already knew about my life with my family so I felt it was only fair I knew the same about him. There was plenty for each of us to find out as time carried on but I felt like this gave us the best foundation. My eyes drifted to the water and breathed in the chilly air letting goosebumps rise along my arms and neck.
"My family is gone... they were decimated.. I can remember vividly to this d-day, their corpses... lifeless and b-broken.." his voice broke as the images of corpses: some human, others in wolf form, all mutilated in some way. Stumbling back as his breathing hitched, the memories attempting to flood him.
As he slowly regained his breath and composure, he apologized, "So sorry... as I was saying, after finding them I followed the only scent around, something about it seemed familiar to me. When I ended up standing over a sleeping figure at the end of the scent, I had to know... I rolled him over and confirmed my worst fear.. my FATHER had killed my mother, sister, and 3 brothers in a fit of rage!!! I didn't even think twice as I felt that same rage boil in my blood, I slashed his throat just as he started to stir!" He shouted as now tears streamed down his face though his crimson eyes showed nothing but pure, unbridled rage.
"You need to go back... to the village.. NOW!!!" He roared, as he hit a nearby tree with a powerful punch that snapped it clean off the trunk causing it to fall into the river with a booming crash. "PLEASE!!! GO!!!"
I listened to his story in both horror and awe. I was embarrassed to admit that I enjoyed the fact that he was as fucked up as me, it also made me feel small. He dared to kill the man who wronged him and his family while I gave myself over to mine in fear.
Seeing tears fall down his strong face made venom well in my throat. I wanted nothing more than to hurt the people that caused him pain. I didn't feel sorry for him, as I knew that going through this made him the man he was today, and that was something to be proud of. For once, even though his eyes had gone bloodshot and I could sense he was barely in control of himself, I wasn't afraid of him.
His suggestion of my leaving hit me like a ton of bricks. That was the last thing I wanted to do, everything in my body told me to stay, to be there for him. I took a deep breath and made my way closer to his shaking form before wrapping him in the tightest hug I could muster.
"It's okay... I'm so sorry you went through that.." I whispered, my lips just centimeters from his earlobe. I held him as tight as I could hoping he wouldn't shove me away and make me leave, I wanted nothing more than to be there for him in his time of need.
