The young woman woke up slowly, feeling a soft and comfortable mattress underneath her body. Her gaze was hazy, her mind still asleep. Thinking what she lived before was a mere nightmare, she bundled up more under the warm covers to doze off again. She had never felt such comfort back at the church.
Wait.
"BACK AT THE CHURCH"?!!
"WHAT THE FU- ARGH!" Solace exclaimed as she jolted up, unable to finish the sentence due to the audience she realized she had.
Two men of very distinct demeanours were looking down upon her.
The first one had fluffy auburn hair and stared at her with artificial sweetness. His icy grey gaze felt like honey, in a grotesque and off-putting way: so sweet it became nauseating, so sticky it was inescapable, and so thick it was asphyxiating.
The other one had short blond hair and studied her with resentment and annoyance. He resembled a machine scanning through its lenses, represented by his rectangular librarian glasses, trying to find her every weakness and flaw to exploit. His glassy yet bright green eyes glared at her with an air of superiority and arrogance. This one was far from feeling as cloying and viscous as the other. Quite the opposite: It was insipid, dry, and exceedingly cold.
Solace felt greatly disturbed by both: Were they watching her as she slept?! What kind of Edward Cullen bullshit was this?!!!!
"Ah~, finally!" Purred 'Sticky Eyes', sitting on the bed. "My darling has awoken. How very thrilling!~" An amused, breathy chuckle left him as he gently picked up her hand and pressed his lips to her knuckles. Solace was repulsed. She tore her hand from the stranger's grasp, her heartbeat feral with fear: it was the same voice of the one who knocked her out.
"My~ it seems as though I've gotten myself a feisty one.~" he chuckled once more. "I forgot to introduce myself; my name is Kasvald Sutton, the only sibling with real appeal here. I am delighted to make your acquaintance, my darling.~" Kasvald condescendingly smiled.
"What in the Wattpad-"
"I recommend you both revisit how you behave. Not only because of your vulgar display of vocabulary but also because of the volume of your voices. It is maddening to the point of causing me a horrible headache and fogging my thoughts." Scoffed the one with sandy blond hair and glasses in the back, who glared at her full of contempt. "Our little... 'Guest' has already caused enough fuss; I recommend you don't add your share of egoism, Kasvald. Remember; she's also mine."
"EXCUSE ME, WHAT?!!" Shouted Solace.
"And there it goes again..." Sighed the author of the monologue as he caressed his temples to calm a sudden headache. "Please keep your voice down, or better yet, don't speak; it might keep your deplorable manners at bay."
His auburn-haired brother soon picked up on the sarcasm in his tone. Solace paused for a moment, feeling offended by the mere audacity of the -for the lack of a better name- asshole before her.
An irked smile made its way to her face as she was about to go all out on him. Her back straightened, and her lungs filled with air unhurriedly until finally:
"First of all, my name is Solace. Thank you for asking. Second of all, you are rather quick when it comes to being rude to those around you. Please slow down. Third, I advise you to keep your terrible attitude at bay: you locked me in here, knocked me unconscious, scared me half to death, limited my access to my car, and objectified me to the point of saying I'm someone's belonging. And yet you have the nerve to tell me that my manners are deplorable? I thought you were the one who was going to 'teach me manners'... it might have to be the other way around." Responded the young woman calmly as she looked the blond in the eyes, as if defying him. A laugh from Kasvald resonated in the the room.
"She has a point, Skafil." the auburn-haired brother chimed.
Skafil grunted, biting his tongue before saying anything he might regret later. She was right, and he knew it. He concluded it would be best to explain everything to her.
"Anyways... Solace: You were sent here by Father Thomas to... get... fixed..." he started, awkwardly trying to find the right words while Solace sat cross-legged, completely relaxed, still looking him in the eyes. Kasvald laughed yet again.
"Could you please... stop with the eye contact? It's getting annoying." Skafil grounded.
"Sorry, I have a habit of looking the people I'm listening to in the eyes." She replied, a smirk forming after she finished. "Why? Is Blondy shy?~"
"Wha- Are you seriously hitting on me? Do you not understand the situation??"
"Oh, I understand perfectly: knocking me out cold is a great way to get... whatever Wattpad this is through that thick skull of mine." She breathed out, sarcasm dripping from her every word.
A sigh escaped Skafil: he already had lost hope in her. Kasvald was having the time of his life.
"I don't know if you have anything salvageable at this point." The blond analyzed, annoyed.
"Right back atcha."
After calming down, Kasvald moved next to her.
"I like this one, Skafil!" He winked at Solace, repulsing her.
Skafil looked in his brother's direction, his expression softening ever so slightly.
"Well, if Kasvald is up for it, I'll see what I can do." He said, not bothering to hide his soft spot for his brother. "But why are you so casual to us? After all the things you named, it seems kind of... reckless, not to say stupid and disrespectful."
"The fact that I'm not afraid doesn't mean I welcome you with open arms. And respect is a two-way path between people with more than three braincells." Solace clarified, still showing off her pearly whites mockingly.
"You are a cocky one, aren't you?" He spat out through a gritted teeth smile.
"And you've got one upset tummy..."
Suddenly, the blond roughly grabbed her by her jaw, forcing her to look up at his angered expression.
"Quit teasing me, or I promise: you will get hurt." Skafil hissed.
"Are you threatening me or reassuring yourself?" Solace mumbled, defiance spread all over her squished face.
Skafil's brows only wrinkled together even more, glaring at her. Solace didn't back down and glared back condescendingly.
If looks could kill, both of them would already be more than dead.
"Do you need me to leave you two at it or..?" Kasvald remarked, making the other two whip their heads in his direction. Skafil tore himself from her while Solace slumped back into her arms. The one with grey eyes laughed yet again.
Skafil looked at her coldly before concluding he had seen enough. He hurried out of the room and left the woman with his brother. Questions ran through his mind in the space of a second:
Why would she tease him so? Did she not realize the situation she tangled within now? Did she know something that made her so fearless, or was she just foolish?
