Los Angeles 1992...
"I understood that my colleague thought it appropriate to refer you to me," it's the voice of the orthopedic surgeon who evaluates Mick's back.
Until now, Mick was treated by a rheumatologist, but after a while his condition got worse. The pain begins to be felt more strongly, and the treatment he is taking almost has no effect.
So he was advised to go to this orthopedic surgeon. The best surgeon in the city. A woman in her mid 40s, close to his age, with blue eyes like his. Surgeon Elizabeth Rubenovic.
She touches him on the back, on the spine, the cause of his pain.
"Has your pain gotten worse recently? If so, is it more severe, do you feel pain more often?" Is Mick asked.
"Yes. I feel pain more often," he answers affirmatively.
The surgeon nods and asks him a couple of questions. At the end, she writes something down, very focused.
"Will I have to be operated on?" Mick asks suddenly.
"I don't know yet. I will have to run some tests and we will see along the way," the woman tries to smile.
Mick exchanges a few more words with her and walks to the door. The doctor follows him, and she is the one who opens the door.
They both have a shock.
In front of them is a young woman with a face as astonished as theirs. Her hand is clenched into a fist, stuck in the air, a sign that she wanted to knock on the door.
The woman glances at the young woman in wonderment.
"Hi mom," Kim smiles slightly embarrassed, her eyes gliding to Mick. "I really didn't want to bother you... Sorry... I know your schedule is almost over. I needed something. I'm sorry," she apologizes to Mick too.
He smiles softly at her, not caring about the incident.
The smile and warm expression on this woman's face could never anger even the harshest person. At least that's what Mick thinks.
So this is the surgeon's daughter. He would never be guessed because the two do not look alike at all.
"Please excuse my daughter," smiles the woman, gesturing towards the door.
"No. It's alright," the man smiles calmly.
"See you next week then," the woman gives him a calm smile even though there is restlessness in her blue eyes.
Kim and Mick make eye contact once more, both smiling and he goes out. Inside, Kim walks in, pulling the door behind her.
Her mother sits at her desk, looking at a file.
"I'm sorry that I disturbed your consultation," says her daughter apologetically who is in front of her mother, sitting on the chair.
"My patient was leaving anyway... But still," she fixes her eyes on her daughter, "why did you come? What happened?"
"Unfortunately, my car is at the service now. Can I borrow yours for just two days?"
"Oh, God damn child! What did you do with it again?" Her mother is vexed by the news.
"Nothing. Except that in the middle of traffic, the engine suddenly failed."
"You are just like your father," sighs the woman, closing the file. "He didn't take care of his car either. He was always with it at the service every month."
"Oh, mom," the young woman rolls her eyes.
Kim's mom is right though.
Her husband was so clumsy. His car spent more time in service than rolling on the road.
