After three months...
In the early hours of the day, Kim and Mick prepare breakfast together. They are thrilled due to the fact that today they will go to the ultrasound of the baby, where they will be told the gender. Kim could barely sleep last night. She is very eager.
And Mick is eager too. He finally has the opportunity to go for an ultrasound of the baby, because until now he had to stay at home and recover from the operation.
A nervousness tries him and Kim does not even suspect what is in his troubling mind.
Some dark thoughts and a sad scenario that he can't get his head around.Mick does not reveal his feelings, and together with Kim he prepares fluffy pancakes, which Kim craves.
Leaving these aside, Mick is recuperating day by day and can already do the activities he used to do every day. Kim always keeps an eye on him, taking care of him. Mick also jokes, hinting that she is like a nanny.
Every week, Kim is indispensable at Mick's physiotherapy sessions. The young woman divides herself between work, Mick, doctor's check-ups and physiotherapy sessions. He has to remind her to take a break and relax, because he thinks she is doing too much.
Now 18 weeks pregnant, Kim's nausea has lessened. But she starts having some very strange cravings. Cravings that she has never had before.
Her belly rounded, and not long ago she felt the baby's movements. At first she was confused, because the feeling was strange. As if something was tickling her belly.
As the couple sets the table and eats, Kim flinches with her hand on the tummy.
"Babe? What happened?" Mick is worried.
"The baby!" Kim smiles widely. "The baby kicked!"
"That's amazing," smiles Mick, recovering from his fright. "But honey, you scared me."
"Sorry," Kim has that pure smile, which Mick can't resist.
"It's like I have a little fish in my belly that swims continuously," Kim chuckles. "That's how it feels!"
Mick smiles and puts his hand on her tummy, waiting to feel something.
"I can't feel anything," he says a little disappointed.
"My OB told me that only after a few more weeks you will also feel when the baby kicks," smiles Kim. "Don't worry. You will have all the time to feel the movements."
Mick smiles and kisses her on the cheek, Kim smiling lightly.
She looks back at him and can't help but notice the switch in the expression on his face. A concern. Something abruptly changed in Mick.
"Babe? Everything is okay?"
"I..." Mick seems caught off guard. "Everything is fine, honey. But..."
"But what?" Kim's brown eyes widen with anxiety. "If there is something wrong, tell me!" She replies in a slightly authoritative tone.
"There's something you need to know," he confesses sadly and her heart races. "It's something about our baby. My daughter, Stormy... She suffers from the same disease as me. She was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis years ago. Unfortunately, it is hereditary."
"Are you afraid that our baby will also have ankylosing spondylitis?" Kim asks him, now fully aware why he was behaving like that.
"Yes," Mick whispers and sighs for a long time. "It was terrible when I found out that Stormy has the same condition. I felt guilty. That it was all because of me..."
"It's not your fault. You know that," she interrupts him, with a soft smile and a handshake. "Sometimes we cannot control what is happening around us. We can't control ourselves. We cannot control our heath sometimes. Now I understand your concern. But there is no need to be so pessimistic. Maybe the baby will not have this condition. And even if in the end they would have it, it is up to us as parents to take care of them."
Mick smiles and hugs her, caressing the back of her neck.
Although Kim seems to keep her composure, deep inside she is worried about the baby's health.
Although Mick confessed, she already knew about this risk. She did not know that Stormy also has ankylosing spondylitis, but she knew that it is hereditary. It was not difficult for her to think that her and Mick's baby could have this condition. She just studied in this field. And her OB is informed about this matter. And even from the womb, it is not known if the baby would have any health problems that would indicate ankylosing spondylitis. Symptoms may appear much later.
Kim tries to focus. Today is the big day when they are finding out the gender if their baby. Their wedding will take place in a week. Nothing can steal their well-being and happiness. They will be a family soon.
After a few hours...
"You have no more patience. Is that so?" Kim asks Mick as they wait their turn to enter the office.
"Don't you feel the same way?" He smiles. "It seems that time passes too slowly. I can't wait to tell the family and friends about our baby."
"Oh," Kim caresses her bump. "Someone gets excited too," she giggles.
"The baby is excited too," smiles Mick, gently pressing his hand on her tummy.
It doesn't take long and they are called inside. Both impatient, they make their way inside. Kim is told to sit on the consultation table, Mick follows her, holding her hand.
The technician is walking next to them, applying the gel on Kim's tummy and looking at the screen.
Kim and Mick look closely at the little creature on the screen that moves its limbs so actively.
The technician monitors if the baby has any abnormalities, being very focused on the screen, moving the transducer on Kim's tummy. Finally, he tells them:
"Everything seems fine. You have a healthy baby."
Kim and Mick look at each other, incredibly happy. However, they both dispell a shadow of scepticism in their minds. Their baby may seem healthy now and after birth. But that condition can show up later in their child's life.
"Would you like to know the gender?"
"Oh yes!" Exclaims Kim cheerfully, Mick gripping her hand softly.
It doesn't take long, the technician looks carefully at the screen. In a few moments, he says:
"It seems you have a baby girl! Congratulations!"
"A baby girl?" Kim gushes, almost unable to believe her ears.
"Yes, honey," Mick whispers affectionately. "A baby girl. As we both wanted."
"This is wonderful!" Kim gives him an excited smile, her eyes are watery. "I can't wait for everyone to find out. We are going to be the parents of a baby girl."
"A sweet little girl just like her mother," Mick kisses her forehead, she closes her eyes smiling, a tear running down her face.
