Pete’s POV:
I was woken up to the sounds of birds creeping outside my window. I yawned while stretching myself up. Today was a big day of my life as I was finally getting married. Oh! Don’t be mistaken, I am not marrying the love of my life, I am marrying someone my parents have chosen for me.Well, I met him just once in presence of my father but I didn’t get to talk to him. When I started to work after finishing my studies, my father made it clear that I should not indulge myself in relationships. His only motive was to get me married to the man he chose. And then, just after six months, he introduced me to this person who was his friend’s son.
I didn’t get to speak to him when we met, we just met, had lunch, with my father talking to him while I watched them both. I don’t know what love marriage or arrange marriage means but I don’t definitely feel that I’m marrying someone with whom I’ll be compatible with.
And I know I don’t have any options so I agreed to my father’s decision bracing myself for whatever that will follow. I left my bed thinking of getting fresh and preparing for my big day. And when I stepped out of the bathroom I saw my wedding dress lying on the bed.
I would have preferred to run away from the wedding but that would again get me in trouble because my father will go to any extent to get his wish fulfilled. Right now, I was having cold feet because I was feeling something is wrong.
I got dressed and stepped out of the room and descended the steps. I could hear my parents talking in the living room. When I came into view, their attention got diverted to me, as usual, I could see mae’s loving gaze while my father scrutinized me. He stepped forward and fixed my hairs saying, “You should make yourself look presentable. And I don't want any mistakes from you today. I hope we are clear.” My father’s voice was stern as he spoke. “I understand…” I replied in a low tone. He hummed in response before we moved to leave the house.
When we arrived at the venue, I was rushed into another room where I was sat and those people began to work on fixing my appearance. And that fixing meant applying makeup which I didn’t like at all. They were combing my hair and fixing them perfectly.
I sat there quiet waiting for them to finish their work and after what felt like eternity, they finally allowed me to look at myself in mirror. They surely did a great work because I could see myself looking better.
After a while, my parents appeared into the room and as expected, my father was giving me the list of dos and don’ts while mae stood watching. Once he left, she moved closer and held my hand. “Baby…. I am sorry… I wish I could help you but you know your father. There is no way that you can get away unharmed. But remember one thing, if he treats you badly, you can always come to me. I will make sure that he will never ever hurt you again. Alright?” she said.
Her words were assurance to me. I knew my mother well. She was calm in her demeanor but she was also strong enough to stand for something that was not right. But in current situation, she too didn’t stand a chance as my father would have done anything to get me married to this person.
Then I was headed to the entrance with my mother beside me. She kept giving me assurance that everything is going to be fine and then I was handed the bouquet. I sighed while holding the flowers as I stood at the entrance.
I could hear the noise coming from inside and felt my feet turning cold. There were so many people present and the worry that I might screw up everything began to creep into my mind. I was feeling nervous and wanted to run away. But then, the doors were opened and it was the cue for me to walk down the aisle.
I spared a glance around to see the people seated and looking in my direction. Soon, por appeared beside me and held my hand. “Remember, no mistakes..” he whispered as he began to walk. I kept telling myself to keep calmnas descended the steps and moved towards the stage.
