(Y/n) Pov
I run down the halls to my bedroom, practically throwing myself into the room and sliding down the now shut double doors. Tears are streaming down my face. I feel helpless and lost. What am I gonna do," I keep repeating those words over and over in my head.
My shaking and sobbing stops when I feel multiple pairs of arms embrace me tightly. I look up with blurry vision to see my maids crying too. I wipe my eyes and straighten up, just now taking in my surroundings. My closet door is open, and there's a bag and multiple outfits on my bed.
I get up and walk over to my closet, standing in the doorway and taking it all in. Several of my hangers are now bare. Most of my drawers are open and my travel section is almost empty. I frown and walk over to my bed, peering inside the backpack. There are several spare pairs of underwear and socks, lots of food, and a blanket. Along with a flashlight, a lighter, a pocket knife, and a bag with enough gold coins to last me months if not a year.
I turn around slowly to face my maids, speaking softly. "This is what he meant isn't it, when he said he didn't want to see me again. He wants me to use the secret passage to run away, to escape the arranged marriage." The girls nod their heads in confirmation and walk over to stand beside me.
Momo puts her hand on my shoulder and squeezes it. "We realized that was his plan when you told us about the conversation before you left for dinner, so we packed you a bag, to save you time. We'll miss you dearly, but we think this is for the best. We don't want you to be unhappy for the rest of your life, and who knows what they'll make you do now that Shoto's father is in power. I did some research on King Enji Todoroki, he is a terrible man. Power hungry. He uses Shoto as his puppet, poor boy. I imagine this is his way of taking over your father's kingdom without force, to save his reputation," Momo grits her teeth in frustration.
I sigh, reaching for the two pairs of clothes and heading into the bathroom to change. I understand why they're having me wear both outfits, it's spring, so it's warming up, but it's still chilly. Not to mention it will save me room in my backpack while also giving me more options. I come out once I'm dressed to see the girls double-checking that everything I will need is in the bag.
I smile to myself, realizing I won't be recognized by the citizens and guards in the village. Due to my "shameful behavior" and lack of obedience, my father has kept me hidden. This means no one in town can rat me out to the guards, that should make this whole escape thing easier.
I pull on the boots that Ururaka handed to me and sling my travel bag over my shoulder. I bring the girls into one last hug, but we're interrupted by a knock on the door. We pull away quickly and the girls usher me over to the secret door in my closet.
"Hello?" A voice calls from the other side of my double doors. "My father sent me to talk to you. I think he's hoping we'll come to peace with this whole situation."
"Shit. It must be Shoto," I whisper.
"Just one second," Momo answers before shoving me through the secret door and pulling it shut behind me. I decide to stay put for a little so I can head their conversation. I wonder what her excuse for my absence will be.
I hear Shoto being let in, and the door shutting softly. "She's not here right now, she left to gather her thoughts," Tsu tells him. Smooth, I think.
He sighs, and speaks quietly to the point where I can barely hear him. "She ran away didn't she? She seems like the type to do that. I wish I had the courage to stand against my father the way she does hers. Well, I guess I'll start now, by not telling him of her escape. If anyone asks, she slammed the door in my face when I showed up and fell asleep shortly after. Goodnight ladies." As I hear him exit and shut the doors, I let out a breathe I didn't know I'd been holding.
So he really is a nice guy, I think as I make my way through the passage, lighting the lanterns with my lighter as I pass to illuminate the tunnels. The passage consists of a maze of tunnels leading to the main room in a building that's been abandoned since before I was born. Aizawa and I used to sneak out to the building to play all the time, we are the only ones who have the route memorized, so even if the guards find the door, they'll have one heck of a time making it through to the other side.
I reach the end of the maze and unlock the giant door, opening it to reveal a spacious room lit only by the light of the setting sun shining through the window across from me. I wish I could say it looks exactly as I left it, but it seems to be, occupied. There isn't anyone here, which is probably why the lanterns that litter the floor aren't on. But there is a makeshift bed in the center of the room, along with a variety of weapons lined up along the back wall under the window. There's a bookshelf in the corner of the room closest to me, with a small space between it and the wall. I enter the room to observe the contents of the bookshelf. This seems to be where the mystery inhabitant keeps their food.
I turn around in fright at the sound of footsteps walking up the stairway to the building. Oh my God! What do I do? I look around in search of a hiding spot, and end up ducking behind the bookshelf. Please don't find me, please don't find me, I chant in my head as I hear the door creak open.
The person walks in, humming a tune I don't recognize, and sets a bag down. I hear him, I think it's a him, shuffle over to the wall with the weapons and drop one down into the pile, making me flinch. He then walks up to the bookshelf, and I suck in a breathe. There's no backing to the bookshelf, the only things keeping him from discovering me right now are several bags of bread. I cross my fingers and pray he doesn't grab the bread.
The bag in front of my face is moved and I'm left looking into bright, big green eyes. He has curly green hair, and freckles covering his cheeks. "Hi..." I wave shyly, not really knowing what to say or what's going to happen next.
His eyes widen, getting bigger than I would have thought possible. "Wh-who are you?!" he shouts, stumbling backwards to the middle of the room. I put my hands up and slowly walk out from behind the bookshelf, trying not to alarm him any further.
"I come in peace." I giggle at my cliché remark, then remember this is serious. "I'm the girl who used to come here as a kid. My name is (y/n). How long have you been living here?"
I see realization hit him as he relaxes. "I was wondering who's toys those were when I arrived, I kept them by the way, they're just in the next room over. And I've been living here for just over 6 years. I used to wander a lot, after fleeing my old village, but then I found this place, and well, no one ever showed up to claim it. My names Izuku Midoriya by the way," he smiles shyly, holding a hand out to me.
I shake his outstretched hand, giving him a smile. "It's nice to meet you Midoriya. You wouldn't happen to be okay with me staying here with you, would you? Just for a little while at least? I can't go back home." I scratch the back of my neck and smile sheepishly.
He smiles brightly. "I'd love that, I've been longing for some company lately anyway. Have you eaten yet?" he asks, holding up the bag of bread he had grabbed a few moments ago.
"No. I kind of ran away in the middle of dinner," I laugh. Now that I think about it, it could actually be considered quite humorous. "But you don't have to feed me, I packed enough food to last a few days," I say, pulling a sandwich out of my backpack.
"Oh okay, but we can start sharing when you run out, I have plenty. How did you get in here anyway?" he questions, taking a seat on the floor to eat his bread.
"There's a secret maze connecting this room to my bedroom in my home. That's how I used to get here as a kid, and how I escaped tonight. I'm one of the only people who knows the route through the maze," I say, taking a seat across from him. We sit in silence for a while, just eating.
Midoriya finishes his food and stands up, wiping his hands off on his shorts. "There's a couch in the next room over, although you probably already know that. If we can get it in here you can sleep on it. I sleep in here because the fireplace keeps it warmer in here," he gestures to the fireplace on the wall behind me, pulling a lighter from his pocket to show me how he lights it.
"That's sounds good," I reply as he puts the lighter away, finishing my sandwich and following him into the next room. This must be where he put all of my toys, I think as I begin to go though the pile of children's toys in the far corner of the room, completely forgetting what we came in here for. My eyes fall on a small princess crown. I pick it up, my mind wandering back to all the times I spent here with Aizawa. I would make him wear the crown and be the princess, because I never had any interest in it. I still don't, I don't care about running my father's kingdom, not one bit. That's why it was so easy to up and leave, I'm happy to be leaving the mantle of princess behind me.
As I snap back into reality I realize my eyes are watering. I shake off the sadness and turn around to see Midoriya watched me, his expression showing concern. I give him a smile and walk over to one end of the couch, preparing to pick it up once he's ready.
He grabs the other end and we carry it back into the main room, neither of us uttering a word. It's a peaceful silence, one full of understanding. He can probably tell I miss those memories from my childhood, it makes me wonder what his was like.
"Hey Midoriya, what was your life like before you came here? At your old village? You don't have to answer if it's too personal, I'm just curious," I ask, taking a seat on the couch and pulling my blanket out from my backpack.
"Oh not it's fine. Life was pretty good. I lived with my mom, and spent most of my days with my friend Kacchan. He never admitted that we were friends, but I didn't take no for an answer, and I kind of followed him around everywhere. We'd spend the summers with our friend Todoroki too, he was the prince of the kingdom my village resided in. The only time he had away from his father and princely duties was the summer, and we had a lot of fun." I'm not positive but I think I notice a faint blush dusting his freckled cheeks at the mention of Todoroki. Wait. Todoroki, why does that name sound familiar?
"Holy shit!" I accidentally shout out loud, making Midoriya jump. "Sorry. Do you mean Shoto Todoroki?"
"Yes," he answers with a smile. " The same Shoto Todoroki your father wants you to marry. I'm assuming that's why you ran away?"
I gasp. "H-how?! How do you know who I am?"
"Your full name was on one of the chests full of toys . I made the connection when you said you came here as a child, and you told me your name was (y/n), (y/n) (l/n)," he explains, seeming quite proud of himself for figuring it out on his own.
"Your not going to turn me in are you? Please I beg you, I can't go back there," I plead, contemplating getting on my knees for full dramatic effect.
"What no! Of course not," he panics, flailing his arms rapidly in the air. "I'm gonna help you. I wanna help you hide form the guards, or maybe we'll just run away. Ya that's probably a better idea..." he continues mumbling under his breathe, probably forgetting about my presence. I sigh in relief, leaning back to lay down on the couch and pulling the blanket over me. My life has taken an interesting turn over the past couple of hours, but I'm lucky to have made a friend, and made it away from my father safely. This will definitely be no smooth ride, but at least my life won't be dull. With these thoughts in mind, I drift off into a peaceful sleep, something I never would have thought possible with the day I've had.
