Charlie couldn't believe that his daughter was sitting in his kitchen with her vampire girlfriend.
That sentence alone would give a normal person a heart attack.
Lucine had gotten nervous and ended up asking Rosalie to come inside for moral support. She'd never been so nervous before seeing her father.
"Sue, tell me. Am I dreaming?" He asked his girlfriend. She smiled at him as she rubbed his arm soothingly to calm his nerves. "No, you're not so don't keep the poor woman waiting and go talk to her." She urged him forward.
She was happy to see Lucine back, she was there when Charlie practically threw his life away after her passing. It took years to finally get him back to his usual self but, no matter what they did, he could never get over his daughter's death.
Holding her cold, lifeless body in his arms was one of the worst moments of his life. One he never wanted to live again.
Lucine quickly looked up from her cup of tea once he took a seat in front of her. "So how'd all this happen?" He asked, gesturing towards her and making her laugh. Her father was rarely good at showing his emotions so he loved covering them in questions.
"You know Tobias Leaf?" Charlie thought about it for a second before nodding. "Yeah, he's Meloria Leaf's kid. She teaches English at the high school. What about him?" Lucine didn't know how to tell him that the fifteen-year-old boy he met was the reincarnation of the angel-like man that visited her in her dreams while she was still alive.
"I don't know how to tell you without sounding crazy." She chuckled awkwardly but Charlie shook his head. "Your sister turned into a vampire, your girlfriend's a vampire and you've just come back from the dead. I don't think it can get any crazier." But god was he in for a shocker.
"Well, that kid is the reincarnation of this angel man that visited my dreams last time I was alive and I've been living in between time and space in his consciousness for the past like ten years." She said quickly as she fiddled with her fingers.
Rosalie was just as nervous.
Charlie stared at her for a second, shocked at what she just told him.
"And here I thought you being related to vampire kings was insane." He sighed, running his hand down his face.
Lucine looked over at her fiancé, nervousness coating her face but Rosalie just gave her a reassuring smile. As long as Lucine didn't know Rosalie was just as nervous, they'd be fine.
Charlie looked at his daughter, watching how the nervousness contorted her features. "Lucine, there's no reason to be nervous." He chuckled, Lucine, let out a sigh. "I know, I just-" She sighed again. "I just haven't seen you in so long and the last time you saw me I was dead in a casket. Plus, it's been fifteen years dad. You've had so much time to heal and move on and here I come back as if nothing happened." Charlie just looked at her for a second before standing up and pulling her up into a hug.
He held her close, the same way he held her the day she told him she was dying.
"I have dreamt of you coming back to me every single day after your brother's brought you back." Lucine buried her face in her father's shoulder. Rosalie used the hug as a cue to go join Sue in the living room to give the small family a moment to themselves.
"And you're right. I have had time to heal, but I never did. I never got over you being gone and I couldn't be happier to not have to worry about that anymore." Lucine sobbed into her father's shirt. She never realized just how much she missed him until now. She held a bond with him that she never held with neither her mother nor sister.
He was what kept her grounded throughout all the craziness before she died. Even when he wasn't around or not thinking about him. He was always there.
"I know I said back then that I was ready but dad, I was so scared. I didn't want to die but it was the only option. I had to learn to deal with it." Charlie held his daughter closer, her words breaking his heart from not being able to protect her.
He didn't like admitting it, even though it was fairly obvious, but Lucine was his favorite daughter. Bella never talked to him and their relationship had been strained from years of no contact. There was no repairing it.
"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you." He said before kissing the side of her head, tears silently rolling down his face. "There's nothing you could've done. There's nothing anyone could've done but at least thanks to Tobias, I get to stay for good." Charlie sniffled, "Remind me to thank that boy. I owe him my life." Lucine laughed even though he was completely serious.
Charlie would be indebted to that boy for the rest of his life for bringing back the one thing he should've never lost.
After a bit more hugging, they finally let go. Both having red puffy eyes and slightly runny noses.
Dad, I don't know any better timing than now to tell you this." She started, not knowing when else she'd get to tell him she was engaged. Especially considering how rare it was to get both Rosalie and her father in the same room.
Rosalie heard, making her way over to her lover, knowing she'd want her by her side for this.
"What is it?" Charlie asked, getting worried that maybe this all was some cruel dream.
"We're engaged!" Lucine said happily, showing him her ring finger where an engagement ring would go. "We haven't had time to go and get a ring but we're getting married soon," Lucine said happily. Charlie let out a sigh of relief, thankfully it wasn't a dream.
He smiled at the lovely couple before going to hug them both. "That's great! You two have always been perfect for each other." He said fondly, watching how his daughter looked at her fiancé lovingly. That's all he ever wanted, to see her happy.
"Thanks, dad. I'm glad you aren't mad or anything like you were with Bella." He shook his head. "You're in your thirties, Lucine. Your sister was eighteen when she got married. Any reasonable parent would be angry over his daughter wanting to get married to her high school boyfriend." Lucine chuckled, knowing how right he was.
"Anyways, it's getting late. How about you crash here for the night? It'd be nice to have you across the hall again." Lucine agreed immediately. "Of course! I've missed that room." Charlie smiled, happy to have her back under the same roof for the night.
Everything was starting to feel right again.
