Tobias didn't realize when he fell asleep but now he lay in Ren's bed with their limbs tangled together.
He slowly untangled himself from her, thankful that she was a deep sleeper, before going out into the rest of the house. As he walked downstairs, he noticed someone outside. He didn't recognize him but he did recognize the tattoo he had on his shoulder.
Lucine had a drawing of it in her journal.
Tobias' cautiousness and fear were suddenly non-existent.
"Can I help you?" He asked the man. Tobias should've been scared. "Who are you?" The man said, his body completely rigid.
"Tobias, Tobias Leaf. You?" He could hear his conscience screaming at him for just being out there in the dead of night talking to a stranger.
"Jacob Black. Now you wanna tell me why I sense Lucine on you?" Tobias' eyes widened. He stumbled back slightly at the question. "Um, Ren and I were reading Lucine's journal. Maybe that's what you're sensing."
Great. First vampires and now I'm talking to a werewolf.
Jacob shook his head. "It's not that. You feel the same way Lucine did when she was-" He stopped himself mid-sentence. Even after all these years, he still had trouble saying it out loud.
"Woah, I'm just a kid," Tobias said defensively as he raised his hands. Jacob scoffed, "Not like that pip-squeak. I mean, I can feel the non-human, almost ancientness about you." Now Tobias was beyond confused.
"Lucine never mentioned anything like that in her journal." Jacob could hear the slight nervousness in his voice, the fast beating of his heart.
"Of course, she wouldn't. She had too much going on to remember something like that." A smile grew slightly as he thought about her. "Look, I don't know what you're sensing but it's probably just the journal. I'm a fifteen-year-old human. That's it. Both my parents are human." He confessed.
Jacob was skeptical to a fault. After everything, Lucine went through before she died. All the secrets she kept. He couldn't help but not believe people.
"Are you and Ren close?" Jacob asked out of nowhere. Tobias seemed strange to him and Ren was an important person to the woman he considered a dear old friend. She gave her life to protect her so the most he could do was make sure she didn't fall into the wrong crowd.
Tobias nodded, "Yeah, we're best friends." He said, still too scared to smile. The fear wasn't feeling earlier suddenly hitting him like a truck. "Best friends huh? You know, me and Lucine were best friends before everything." Tobias shook his head as he remembered that part of the journal.
"We're not like you two. You guys had baggage from a past life either of you didn't remember until the end. Ren and I," He hesitated as he took a deep breath. "Ren and I don't have any baggage from a past we don't remember. Plus, neither of us is dying or holding in a deep secret." That last part was a lie. He still hadn't told anyone about Lucine but what was he supposed to tell them?
Hey, you know that dead girl you guys love so much? yeah, well, she's been living in my conscience since I was little and she practically raised me.
Yeah, probably wouldn't go too well. Especially, since his mother still didn't know about the whole vampire thing.
Jacob sighed as he rubbed his face. "Look kid, I'm not gonna howned you too much about this but I swear if I ever find out you did anything to hurt her or this family. I won't hesitate to rip you to shreds." He warned the boy before walking into the woods and shifting.
Tobias stood there, paralyzed as he ran the words through his head.
"I'll rip you to shreds. Great." He whispered to himself as he shivered, suddenly feeling a cool breeze. He stood outside for a little longer, not wanting to go back to bed yet even though he was terrified Jacob would jump out of the forest lining all wolfed out.
Just as he was about to walk to the porch to take a seat on the stairs, a bright light shone from the darkest corner of the forest.
It started to take form as he was stuck in his spot as if his feet were stuck to the dirt floor.
"Tobias." The voice said. Once his eyes adjusted to the brightness as the light subsided a bit, he realized who it was.
"Lucine. How-" He said as his knees started to feel like pool noodles. She smiled at him, she looked older than in his memories.
"I'm sorry for not telling you the truth earlier Tobias." She said, her smile turning sad. He raised an eyebrow, confused. "What truth?" He questioned, never would he have thought that she had lied to him.
"That we're two souls in one body. That when I was put to rest, I made a promise to keep you company." Her smile didn't falter. "What promise? What are you talking about?" His head started to hurt at her words. Memories wanted to resurface from deep within.
"You've read my journal right?" He nodded, waiting for her to continue. "That angel I wrote about. The angel you've been drawing. Why do you think he looks so familiar?" She asked him as the pain became severe and suddenly he was back on that cliff with her.
"Sometimes, no matter how much love is given nor how much a person deserves to live; destiny must be followed out." His words were so vague yet she understood it all. It felt like a weight was lifted off her shoulders. She was never meant to live this long.
She just wants to rest.
A golden tear rolled down his face as he read her satisfied smile, knowing that this is all she truly wanted. To rest, knowing that those she loves will be okay and happy.
"Even your tears are perfect." She says, making them both chuckle.
He gasps as he comes back from the memory. He was now on the floor, barely holding himself up.
He looked up at her, watching as the wind blew her white dress around as a smile stayed plastered on her face.
"Welcome back, my angel." She said as a tear rolled down her face. His eyes shone white as he remembered the reality of his existence here.
