chapter eight:
navidad
[christmas]

THE FOOD WAS GETTING READY, and the house was getting cleaned for tonight. tonight was christmas eve, or nochebuena.
you were on the couch, waiting for diego's family to get ready. beside you was diego, who was comfortably watching a christmas movie with you.
"so is this a tradition for your family?" you got closer as you whispered to him.
"sort of," diego titled his head, thinking, "we watch a different christmas movie each year."
"i see."
you got up to the kitchen, where diego's family was in the middle of finishing the last touches. mauro started putting the requested food onto the plates and placed silverware to the table.
"gracias por tu ayuda en la mañana." diego's father kindly smiled at you.
diego's mother chimes in, chuckling, "ya entiendo por que nuestro diegito te invito."
you blushed at their sweet comments, and took a seat at the dining room. diego's parents were pretty generous from first impressions, and tonight was going to be the day that you will get to know them even better.
as diego and the rest of his family started filling in the seats, they began with a little toast. at some point, you felt diego's hand on top of yours during the toast. his hands were a bit warm, and you didn't mind it since you felt a bit cold with the spanish weather. once everyone finished saying a minimal speech, everyone raised their drinks up high.
everyone started eating the dish, and it was one of the best cravings that you had all month. diego was sitting beside you, munching on the meal. as you took a napkin with you, you cautiously cleaned your lips, trying not to wipe all the product.
placing the napkin on top of the plate, you silently waited for the remaining people to finish their plates.
the last person finished their dish, and everyone got to the chisme soon after. you were the hot topic for the christmas chisme.
diego's mother played it safe, "so, how did you meet diego?"
"it's accidental," you stated, "but we met at a louis vuitton."
the expressions that diego's parents had seemed like they were surprised, yet interested in your story.
you continued, "i was at my shift when we met, and my friend started to fangirl when she saw diego step into the store. keep in mind that it is normal to see celebrities at my shift. however, he wasn't a household name for me prior to meeting though. anyway, i took a small break and bumped into diego on accident, where he was asking me out on a dinner as an apology."
his family started laughing at the details given. however, the truth was that diego was a giving person, and you're grateful for that. "it was very sweet of him, and i'm thankful for him to be in my life like that."
that sounded as if you had an intimate relationship with diego, but it wasn't like that for now.

around midnight was when you and diego's family gathered together to open presents.
you faced diego, looking down at his outfit, which consists of the polo ralph lauren that you gifted him. you gave him a dead stare. you whispered to diego, "don't expect some presents from me, mr. ralph lauren."
diego playfully rolled his eyes at you, "i know, i know."
diego's presents started reading the tags attached. "and this one's for..."
"this one's for y/n, from diego." diego's father passed the present to you, and you gave diego a smile. you slowly unwrapped the gift until revealing a box with the dior logo at the front.
your faced brightened, unexpected that diego took his time to buy you a luxurious gift. "wow," you exclaimed, "i can't believe you spent a lot of pesos for me."
"y hay mas!" diego added. you gave him that unbelievable look, not really thinking that diego would risk his money for you.
diego's mother asks you a question, "what did you gift him y/n?"
you laughed and pointed at diego, "he's wearing it right now."
diego posed as if he was the bella hadid of the family. you playfully rolled your eyes at him as he passed you your next gift.
you removed the wrapping paper, one by one, until all that was left was a small box that features the logo that read 'cartier.'
"no way," you quietly said to yourself, glancing at the small luxurious box, "you really went all out for me?"
"can't i spoil you, guapa?"
"that was my job."
"key word ⎯ was." diego smirked as he called you out.
you were given numerous gifts from diego and his family throughout the night, and you did the same thing. overall, there was a positive reception between you and diego's family.

the next morning was christmas day. you and diego were up all night talking with his family. by that point, it was now three in the morning and you decided to head to sleep.
"i think it's getting very late, i'll go to sleep now." before going upstairs, you gave diego's family a hug and planted a kiss on their cheek.
you brought your gifts into the shared room with diego, and changed into the matching pajamas that diego's parents gifted you. a few minutes later, diego joined you to call it a day.
you woke up next to diego, who was still sleeping. you studied diego's face, with him looking just as graceful as he is when he is awake. you wanted to give him a good morning kiss, but thinking about you and diego's status, it would've been awkward.
instead, you messed up his hair even more, "merry christmas, guey."
diego gently opened his eyes, and hummed, signaling that he was now awake. in a raspy voice, he responds, "merry christmas beautiful."
