Luke peered around the legends den, his packmates were sleeping soundly. He noticed how many of them had lost a lot of weight from the scarcity of the prey. Maybe Snowcloud had an even worse temper tonight because of an empty belly... He pushed the thought away, quietly trotting out of his nest and the den. Lupo was on night guard at the den arena entrance, his nicked ears twitching.
How am I to get around him? One wrong paw step and he'll bite my ears off! He pressed back a shiver, glancing around. The only way out was the nasty way out...
The waste-corner.
The corner all the wolf packs have, where scraps of spoiled prey go- and where the wolves let out their waste and kick dirt over it.
Luke scrunched up his nose, making light paw steps towards the waste-corner tunnel. He saw Lupo narrow his eyes, but he couldn't pick up the sound of Luke.
The brown-gray he-wolf silently padded out of the tunnel, disgusted by the scent of rotting elk carcass and other waste. He slid under the woven vines, venturing deeper into the forest outside of SkullPack's den arena. An owl hooted above, keeping sharp yellow eyes out for vulnerable prey. The undergrowth gave way to the gravel path near the cliff-bridge that would cross onto the rocky path.
Thank GuideStar that Lupo didn't catch me. Luke huffed, walking towards the cliff-bridge and pelting through it. The rocky path's rough terrain jabbed at his paw pads lightly, the moon was still out and full, shining on the evergreen woodland on FirePack's territory across the river. There was no Rose in his sight, he felt his tail droop and ears flatten.
Please tell me she was able to sneak out... Luke pondered, as anxiety whirled through his thoughts and body. Just as his worries were yearning for his heart, he saw a gray flash of fur leap onto the boulder right next to the FrostFire river.
Rose! He saw her familiar promising amber eyes, glinting with excitement in the nighttime. Luke figured she must've smelled and seen him too, as she quickly waded through the shallow part of the river.
"Luke!" she yipped, as she wove around him. Her sweet scent bathed his tongue, and he felt at home with the pretty she-wolf. "Did you get caught sneaking out?" Her eyes glowed with worry and nervousness.
"No.. but I had to crawl through the waste-corner." Suddenly he felt self-conscious that he possibly stunk. He looked straight at Rose, her eyes showed love, and she didn't show any sign of smelling an odor.
"I was going to do the same thing, but I climbed up a tree right next to it," she woofed, closing her eyes as if remembering it. "I envy wolves with flying powers, I had to leap down. Luckily I'm not injured."
"I'm glad I could meet up with you." Luke murmured, panting happily. He pressed his nose to her muzzle, and she pressed her head into his neck. "Have you ever thought about.. uh.. being mates?" He couldn't believe he blurted that out! Even just meeting with Rose as friends and sitting this close was breaking the wolf pack laws! Luke shifted his paws nervously, as Rose broke the hug and glanced upwards.
"I would love to," she replied, her tail gently wagging. Luke felt his heart burst with joy, he suddenly had no regrets about asking the she-wolf a forbidden question. Cross-pack relationships were strictly disallowed by the wolf laws. "I know we're both taking a huge risk.. but I've liked you for a long time now, Luke."
"Me too, Rose." He licked her ear gently, feeling comforted by her pelt brushing his. He remembered the story about how Twinkle secretly met up with a FirePack wolf, his name was Cameron. She only ended up getting caught by Lupo, and the two got into an awful quarrel. He closed his eyes, fighting anxiety away and treasuring the moment with Rose.
