hazel
i pressed the small green button that popped up on my phone, asking me if i wanted to accept the call from aaliyah.
"hazel!" she screamed from the other side, making me outreach my arm and forcing it away from my ear.
"jesus christ, liyah." i muttered, putting the phone on speaker and setting it down in my lap.
"sorry! but your spending the night at my house tonight."
"oh, sorry i can't. i'm busy." i smirked.
"busy doing what?" she snorted.
"packing my bag!" i smiled, getting up from my bed and grabbing my backpack.
"ok, good! come over in an hour!" she yelled, before hanging up the phone.
i shook my head and began packing.
i tucked my phone into my back pocket before knocking on the door in front of me.
i could hear aaliyah's footsteps running towards the door. she opened the door, a huge smile on her face.
"come on! my mom just went grocery shopping and got such good stuff!" she grabbed my wrist and dragged me to the kitchen.
"hi toni!" i smiled as i passed the older woman on the couch.
"hey, sweetheart. make yourself at home." she smiled brightly at me.
i could definitely see who aaliyah got her smile from.
"don't worry. i will." i laughed.
i sat my bag down on the floor next to the kitchen island and sat down on on of the stools.
aaliyah opened the pantry and threw a sour cream and onion chip bag at me. i opened it and immediately started eating them.
she opened her fridge and got two cokes out. she slid mine across the counter to me. i grabbed it and took a sip of the sweet soda.
"nothing better than a fresh coke, right?" she said after taking a sip of hers.
"what are you? a coke salesperson?" i laughed, picking up another chip from the bag.
"never mind that," she rolled her eyes, "sorry i didn't take you home last night." she was now frowning, leaning on the countertop.
"don't worry about it. it's fine, besides i got a ride home."
"ok but from who?" she screeched.
i took a breath before answering her.
"remember the brunette that looked like dylan a little."
she immediately covered her face with her hands.
"oh no! don't tell me you actually went and talked to him."
"well, i was blackout drunk. i woke up in my bed with a note from him and his number. here, look at the text messages."
i took out my phone, clicking on his contact and scrolling all the way up to when i first texted him.
"i guess i thought he was dylan and asked him for a ride."
her eyes went wide as she read through them.
"woah, he likes you." she handed me back my phone, smiling.
"what? there's no way. he met me last night!"
"ok, well he thinks your cute at the least. i mean the way he texts you and not everyone is just gonna take a drunk girl home."
"yeah liyah, he's nice. you read it yourself, he didn't wanna leave me there, drunk." i rolled my eyes.
"whatever, but it's good. do you think your gonna keep talking to him?"
"i mean i want to. but it's crazy."
"why?"
"did you not read to the end?"
"no! what happened?"
"his name is matt... sturniolo."
"shut the fuck up! like-"
"language!" aaliyah's mom yelled from the living room. "save it for when your up in your room."
"sorry mom!" she yelled back.
"wait- like the actual matthew sturniolo?" she squealed.
"yes!" i nodded.
"oh my god! well, now you have to keep talking to him!"
"i know, but i don't want him to think i'm only talking to him because he's famous."
"well, do you like him?"
"what? aaliyah! i just met him. have you even been listening?"
"ok, so? you can still like him!"
i sighed and rubbing my eyes.
"this is not some disney movie! it's not love at first sight bullshit!" i lowered my tone she only aaliyah could hear.
"it could be!" she said is a singing tone like snow white.
we both laughed as her mom came into the room.
"aaliyah, i completely forgot." she sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose with thumb and middle finger.
"what's up, mom?"
"we have to go pick up amelia at the airport. you know how she wants you to be there and i was gonna offer for hazel to come but then i remembered that she had to bring her boyfriend. plus, she wants us there by three and its so far! so we gotta leave now"
i watched as aaliyah huffed and rolled her eyes. amelia was her older sister.
she had just went on a trip to california for no reason at all and brought her annoying boyfriend, andrew.
amelia was almost 25 but still lived at home. she had a shit job as a waitress that barely made her anything. the tips weren't on her side either.
her boyfriend was even worse. he was always here. like he practically lived here. i was here a lot to but at least i actually went home.
"hazel, i'm sorry. i completely forgot about it, honey."
"no no, don't worry about it. it's fine." i smiled at her.
she returned the smile, looking a tad bit relieved.
"your more than welcome to stay here if you'd like.""or you could go home and come back later tonight? or maybe another day." aaliyah shrugged.
"i'll think about it. i'll text what i do."
"sounds good." she said, giving me a thumbs up and following her mom out to the car.
i stood in the front door frame and watched as they drove off, waving before going back inside.
i sat down on the couch before deciding on what to do. i ran upstairs and put my bag in aaliyah's room.
then walked back downstairs and went outside.
