Chapter 16 - Secret, Can You Keep It?

"EVERYONE STAY CALM!!!" Mrs. Catherine shrieks at us. 

Willow is in tears, screaming. Perci is doing the same; she cracked under the pressure of trying to help someone who is feeling the same way she is. 

Rosalina is panicking, and you know things are at their worst when Rosalina panics; Rosalina never panics.

I'm pacing in circles, muttering nonstop to myself, on the verge of losing my sanity. Mrs. Catherine is on the phone, trying to focus. "No, no, NO!!!" Mrs. Catherine shouts into the phone. 

"I REFUSE to bother any Keepers. I am not going to bother them for a mere school incident!!! If anything, the police are fine!!"

If you must know, "Keepers" are what we call people with powers. Some call them Holders, Elementals, Epics, Superiors, etc. . . some people just call them demons. Depends where you live. Here, they are referred to as "Keepers." Anyway, Mrs. Catherine hangs up the phone with a "SLAM!". She sighs and puts her head on the desk. 

"We initiated a lockdown. . ." She reminds herself. "The students will be perfectly fine. . ."

"Are the elementary students alright?" I ask in a panicked voice, loud enough to be heard over Perci and Willow's cries. "O-OH!" Mrs. Catherine meets my terrified eyes. "Yeah, yeah, they're alright. We were informed by the elementary teachers that they're off in the city due to some of your friends."

"The CITY?!?!?" I shriek. 

"I'M GOING TO GO THERE RIGHT NOW-" 

"Don't even try it." Mrs. Catherine holds a hand up and I pause. "I have the school's defenses on the highest level. If you even figured out HOW to get out of here, when you come back, the defenses would never let you back inside. In fact, the defenses can be quite dangerous."

I plop down onto the floor, thinking about her pessimistic words. She's right. There's no way I could possibly make it out of here with the defenses up. It's too dangerous to even attempt. 

"I'm going to search the school." I declare. 

"WHAT?!?!?" Mrs Catherine, Willow and Perci screech. 

"I'M GOING WITH!!!!" Rosaline shouts, running after me despite the fact I'm merely walking.

"If a murderer really IS here, they would have reason to hide the bodies, right?" I reason. Rosalina thinks for a moment and then nods. "Y-yeah, you're right." We go down the hallway where we once saw Kai's dead body. Now, it's gone; we never moved it. "Yep." I announce. 

"There's definitely a murderer in the school."

I lean against the wall for a moment. "We just need to find where the body is. If we can find that, we can figure out where the murderer plans on taking people." We walk down the winding staircase. Rosalina is just following me at this point.

We end up at the bottom of the staircase. It's deserted and all the lights are out, leaving us standing in complete and utter darkness. 

The murderer is most likely here. . . 

"Rosalina." I order. "Stay right beside me at all times. This could be very, very dangerous."

She quickly nods and practically glues herself to my side. We walk through the dark, me touching the walls to try and navigate. "Does the school have a basement?" I turn to look at Rosalina. She must know; she's our assistant principal's niece. Mr. Wagner must've taken her around the campus at least once.
