Luke
Recess. It's everyone's favorite time of the day, right? You finally get to escape the torture of work, paper, possible tears, used up erasers and broken led.
Kids just love love LOVE recess. Well, not me. I'm not like the others.
Every day I have to mentally prepare for what's to come when the bell rings.
Although I think the reason I can never get a plan straight is due to the people screaming and running out the door.
The teachers just gave up. They're too glad that the kids will finally be able to make chaos elsewhere. Which I honestly can't blame them for.
I'd want the children to get out of my classroom if I were a teacher, too. But what can you do?
Anyway, I walk up to my friends, Liam and Kyle. For some reason, they're crouched up against the brick wall of the school, peering over the edge as if they were hiding.
"Hi." I say and they jump about a few million feet into the air.
"Oh, gosh," Kyle says, his hand over his heart, clearly trying not to laugh. "Didn't see ya there, Luke." "Yeah, why would you." I deadpan.
"Sh, sh, sh," Liam shushes us quickly in a whisper, holding a finger to his mouth.
"Now's not the time to get mad over various random frequencies Luke. What Kyle meant was we got ourselves in a tiiiiiiiiiny pickle."
He demonstrates with his fingers how small of a problem it is. "And?" I ask. "What's the problem?"
"So, what happened was-" "I WANT TO TELL THE STORY!" Kyle yells, shutting Liam up without a warning. "SHHHHHHHHHHH!" Liam shushes us loudly.
"Fine, good gosh, Kyle." "So we were walking down the hallways to recess, right?" Kyle explains. "But then we ran into Katie."
Katie, to catch you up, is a friend of mine. She is basically this energetic girl who mostly spends time with what they call her 'gal pals'.
Except they're not girly girls. "Katie asked us if we knew where she had left her book." Kyle goes on.
"I knew exactly what this book looked like, so I offered to look for it with Liam since I'd sworn I'd seen it the previous class."
"Go on," I say, intruiged. "But the only situation was that when we walked into the class and picked up the book, it so happened that your worst nightmare was behind us."
I gape at them as Kyle goes on. "Turns out that was his desk! So happened that Katie sits in the same spot HE does. We're kind of running from them."
I take a moment to think about what they just said.
"So you're telling me." I start, my voice wavering with anger. "That you didn't think to tell me that you guys were running from HIM before I CAME HERE?!?!" I shout the last part.
"Shut up, shut up, shut up!" Liam says lightning fast, fear reflecting in his eyes.
Liam tries, but it's already too late. "Well, well, well, what have we got here?" A rough voice rasps. Kyle and Liam look up, terror in both of their expressions.
I freeze. It's Kai; the 9th grade bully that ruins my recess everyday. "Hey hey, boss! Look what the cat dragged in!" One of his goons shouts, laughing in a condescending manner.
Kai smirks at us, an evil gleam in his eye.
"I warned you pencil necks to stay away, did I not?" Kai says, a dangerous smile on his face. "It's not our fault that Katie left her book there!" Kyle cries, clearly not thinking.
"So now you're dragging a girl into this?" Kai asks. "That's just pitiful."
His gang has us cornered now, and they're smiling madly down at us. "Don't touch us!" Liam shouts.
"Or what?" Kai asks, smiling. "Little babys' gonna call mommy cause' he got a boo boo?" Kai's goons laugh like maniacs as Kai smirks at our terrified expressions.
"Get em' boys." Kai says with a flick of his hand.
We gasp as the goons instantly tackle us and strap us down to the ground. "I told you not to mess with me. Stupid 6th graders."
Kai tilts his head in a signal to the guys on top of me, and they instantly get off. Before I can run Kai's got me by the collar, pinned to the wall.
"Any last words, twerp?" Kai asks angrily. "YEAH!" A voice shouts. "You with the big head and the small brain! Put that boy down before you're the one calling mommy!" Katie.
