OCCUPATION: DEAD!
MAY 10TH / 2007
Flash. Another beam of light hit the sienna stone surface, moving from the stone pavement back up the wall of whatever ancient building that they'd all placed themselves next to for a short break. A small group of friends had been walking for a half hour down the quiet streets of Volterra, a town of Italy, on a beautiful night. Few people were out at this time, and the group shouldn't have been either—If it hadn't been for the convincing of one friend then none of them would have even thought about going out so late. Especially in a town they knew nothing nor spoke the language of the locals.

A substandard school that consisted of not even four hundred students had decided at the end of the school year, their 11th and 12th graders would attend a field trip across the world. Only those two grades because they had been closer to the Romeo & Juliet curriculum, and because seniors would get their trip no matter what. This happened to be the school that Cory attended alongside her friends. The group could never comprehend how their destitute little school was even capable of affording such a trip for a whole grade. Then again, none of them were complaining. Chances of even being able to attend this trip had been slim to none. After a year of stressing over exams, assignments and projects, childish drama and worn out teachers, going on such a trip was the equivalent of going to Disney World.

On this night, the moon had been beaming down on the town with illustrious brilliance. Stars had plastered themselves up into the night sky where there hadn't been a single cloud. There was such little light pollution too. Dull buzzing, almost too quiet for the human ear to catch, came from older lampposts that were lined up across the streets. Other than that, any sounds were coming from the group, who made feeble attempts to keep quiet. Their childish laughter had filled the air. Sneaking out had never been so interesting.

Again, a flash of light hit something new as the shutter of a camera came right along with it. The curly-haired girl, Olivia, gave a sardonic smile, "Do you think this would be considered disrespectful?" Theatrically, Cory glanced around the buildings, imitating the way the curly-haired girl had been taking pictures left and right. Then, a soft smile lifted her face as she nodded, "Oh—for sure." Laughing quietly, Mikah posed with her hands near her face, peace signing. "Get me in a picture! This'll be good for a scrapbook or something." Joining in on the fun, Cory placed herself next Mikah and similarly posed with childish antics. Olivia went to take a picture but felt a grip on her disposable camera, something covering the lens.
