DUSK TO DAWN
. . . VOL. 1 / CH. 3
━━━━━━━━
WHAT YOU MADE ME
"Damn it, damn it, damn it..." On and on, the words continued to pour from Cory's mouth that pooled with venom with each passing moments—trying to combat the cravings at her throat. Days had passed. Days since she'd fled the Volturi and traveled, aimlessly. Days since she'd seen Olivia.Pouring from heavy clouds, rain pattered against the cracked and desolate roads. Completely soaked, Cory continued her walk; she had slowed down once she realized she was out of Italy. Northwest. She'd gone northwest from Volterra for near nineteen hours on foot, which got her back to the states. That was the quickest way for her to get around right now. And involved as little human interaction. Except now, she was in one of the densely populated cities in the U.S., Seattle, Washington.
Moonshine illuminated with the streetlights, their images reflected throughput the rainwater pooling the street and sidewalks. It was late, quiet, and around midnight. Mostly, Cory heard the sounds of peace around her. Soft snoring, breathing, or both hummed around her like white noise. Their heartbeats were slow, quiet. Rested. Those beating hearts lulled Cory, like gentle melodies for her restless mind. And for the first time in a long time, she was eased. Although, if she desired, or if necessary, Cory could've tuned the noises out like she'd been practicing. But the sound soothed her—Reminded her of a simpler life, one that she used to have.
Now, things weren't so easy. So, those soft sounds resided in the back of her mind as she carried on instead. Cory let her feet carry her as they saw fit. For the most part, she was on autopilot, following her instincts vaguely, and praying that she would not be led to the closest human in attempts to make a meal out of them.
Sudden sounds emerged in the night as Cory treaded forward. It was quiet, the farther away she was, perhaps half a mile away. The sound of faint dinging, clinking, Cory made out with ease. Some object tapped against ... something wooden, at least that's what Cory thought it was. She'd know as she got closer.
And though it confused her, Cory's instincts had begun to amplify. They started to guide her, blindly. She started to walk just a little faster, and then faster. This strange, hazed, feeling grew in the pit of her stomach clouded her mind—Something so distant, yet, so close. It was a feeling Cory had gotten before she was turned. A sinking, yet floaty feeling—A contradiction. It tightened her chest and made her feel almost dazed.
