Today is my third session in group counselling, advised by my lawyer which I am grateful for because it gives me a chance to get out of the house and listen to other people's stories of abuse and manipulation. It makes me realise that I am not alone, that people can understand what I have been going through.
The first two sessions I said nothing, the group leader, Louisa, told me that it's absolutely fine not to say anything until I'm ready. Turning up and listening is just as important and I understand that.
Grayson is super supportive of me going. He wants me to be able to talk about it with other people that aren't him. I understand that he's worried about me.
I gave myself the objective to speak today at the session. I think it's my time to finally voice my thoughts, to speak out loud with people who should understand. No judgement and no shame.
Louisa greets me as I sit down in the circle, saying hello to the people I've met before and spotting some unfamiliar faces but people come and go as they please. But so far everyone has been kind and inviting.
Twenty minutes into the session and Louisa turns to me, I suck in a breath and nod back showing that I'm ready. She offers me a warm and supportive smile.
I introduce myself but I can guarantee they already know who I am and what my story is. Their eyes are glued on mine as I briefly explain what Richard and Ethel did, the way they gaslit me, controlled me, imprisoned me, manipulated me and when Richard decided to put his hands on me.
