My body is still burning from last night as I open my groggy eyes. The bed creaks underneath me as I roll on to my back. Bakugo hasn't spoken to me after what happened between us, despite a couple of awkward encounters. I tried conving myself it was for the best, but his voice resonated through my head.
"Damnit, I like you Yui."
Liking someone isn't something I get to do in this life. I get the league breathing down my back as I try to protect the people I despised a month ago. |
I get to survive-
Not live.
Just survive.
5:30 in the morning is not a good time for me to be cognizant, as it's apparently the prime time for overthinking, but here I am getting ready for a day of hero training. At least this training has been villain-less. Villains aren't nice guys, they don't have fair fights. The fact that they didn't show up in the middle of the night is a good sign they won't be coming.
"It's time to break yourself." Aizawa stands in front of the group of us, a mountainous view rising behind him. My body is extremely aware of Bakugo who is perched a distance behind me in the group right now. Two holes are blazing in the back of my head as I try to focus on my teacher. "Only when you are broken, can your quirk and strength grow."
Funnily enough, I didn't connect the term being 'broken' to extraordinary amounts of torture, but before I know it I'm 3 hours into an intense quirk training in the middle of a dark cave. Aizawa paired me with Tokoyami. He pushes to maintain control of Dark Shadow while surrounded by darkness, as I maintain a steady light on the staticky figure whenever necessary, which happens to be a fuck ton.
"aaaAAAGGHHHH" Tokoyami roars as Dark Shadow overcomes him yet again.
Sweat trickles down my cheek as I extort as much energy as I can into Dark Shadow. Familiarity floods my senses as I'm brought back to the multitude of times I trained with Dabi in the hideout. As off-putting as it is, the memory is comforting. My head physically twitches, trying to shake the thought out of my head. Quivers wrack my muscles in my arm shooting yellow light at Dark Shadow.
At least I'm not Bakugo holding his hands in boiling water over and over again.
"Thanks for your help, Ritsuki." The bird man sheepishly looks at me over his human shoulder. The sunlight after being surrounded by darkness for 6 hours was blinding. "It means alot that you would do this for me after what happened.. before." My fist playfully punched his shoulder, as I beamed my famous smile at him. "I'm glad I could be here for you."
I genuinely was.
Class 1-B finally showed to camp at some point during the day. We were all tasked with making our own dinner before doing one last training for the day. The fun I had making dinner rivaled the anger I felt when we first learned of the task. I tried not to watch Bakugo chop up a carrot like a pro, but damnit was it entertaining. His narrow gaze focused on his hands intently, but I didn't miss the quick glance he gave in my direction.
I also didn't miss the small quirk of his lips after.
Damn this boy.
The only noise that could be heard was the disgusting noise of slurps and chewing as all 40ish of us ate our dinner without a word. Just as we were finishing our meals, that seemed more delicious after we made them, Aizawa, the male cat, and the blue cat approached our tables.
"Finish your eating, and then we have our next training to attend." I caught the large guy cat grow with excitement behind my mellow teacher.
"YOU'RE GONNA MAKE EACHOTHER PISS YOUR PANTS"
The cat man spoke with such intensity that he simply could no longer hold in. A familiar sigh escaped Aizawa's lips. "What he meant to say is you'll be entering a courage test. Each class will have the opportunity to scare each other, in hopes to be the winning team that shows the most bravery."
This seemed more like a gimmicky game than anything else.
"You will have nothing but your own quirks to scare others with, so be creative." He tapped the edge of the table with his long fingers. "Finish your meals and then we'll tell you your teammates. Class 1-B will scare first."

Todoroki stood next to me as unfazed by the dark woods in front of us as I was. When you grow up with villains, you learn not to be afraid of the dark but become accustomed to it.
Even though we shared a mutual resentment for his dad, I felt guilty standing next to him now, paired up as heroes.
This weird silence is killing me.
"Any idea how this will further us as heroes?" I asked with genuine curiosity.
"Nope." As stoic as he was, I watched as hidden amusement danced behind his eyes at my words. At least he wasn't a total asshole.
Our whistle to begin rang and without hesitation we approached the woods. Bakugo was in the first group to go, despite his refusal of pairing with Grape boy. After them entered Momo and Ojiro. Now it's our turn to be 'scared'.
The terrain was easy enough to travel along, with a designated dirt path through the forest. Within a minute of walking, mushrooms suddenly sprouted around ours feet, brushing against my legs.
"Was that supposed to be a scare?" My smart mouth moved faster than my thoughts. Todoroki took me by surprise as a small smile played on his lips. "I sincerely hope not." The next scare improved by a small margin, this one involving shadows form various creatures along the trees.
"Well at least it's getting better." A small chuckle escaped my lips.
Unexpectedly, smoke filled the air around us. Now this.. this had some promise for a good scare. Todoroki stopped walking and quizzically looked around us. His brows furrowed with concern as he stood. Suddenly his bi-colored eyes shot to mine.
"No one has a quirk like this in 1-B."
The world around me began to spin at a dizzying pace as my panic became suffocating. Involuntarily the weight of my head became too heavy for my neck and my head drooped while my eyelids began to flutter.
F-Fuck.
Before my eyes shut all the way, I caught a glimpse of Todorki stumbling beside me.
"TODOROKI, YUI!"
